You put a nice spin on it that makes me look at it from another angle. That being said, there's one huge, glaring difference. Roy was running out of opponents. That division was weak. Tarver had some clout because there weren't many people to chose from. There are PLENTY of fighters from 140-147 to fight. It isn't like Guerrero is the main option and Floyd would rather not fight than scrap with him. As I said before, finish your breakfast. Cut your grass before you start pruning trees and trimming bushes. Guerrero is like Jesse Vargas level as far as popularity. Boxing has a totem pole, and he isn't anywhere near the top of it. You can't call Floyd scared and challenge his manhood when you pulled out of a fight with Maidana and didn't even revisit it.

no spin...just a different perspective. i'll agree....guerrero should take on some other challenges to get the shot....but i like his ambition. guerrero has won more than one title in more than one division. he's headlined a handful of televised shows. to say that he's on the same level as jesse vargas (i had to ask myself, 'who the hell is jesse vargas?' before i remembered. lol) is an exaggeration. i don't think anyone is claiming guerrero as the main option for floyd...and as for the maidana fight...he pulled out because of the injury. i can't fault him for opting to fight for a mandatory spot rather than facing maidana... but again...who at 140-147 is calling out floyd? a closed mouth don't get fed.

you definitely gave me a different view point professor. your knowledge of the game never ceases to amaze me. I also believe though that guerrero has almost 0 chance of beating floyd. his power at 47 is average. Still i love the guy, his story and what he has dealt with so far in his life. its hard seeing a loved one going thru cancer. nothing wrong with calling floyd out, hell floyd might even consider it. either way he makes noise and squeaky wheels get oiled.

Only thing I can give Guerrero is that he's game. But he's delusional, something Tarver was not when he called out RJJ. I like Guerrero but I've never really been sold on him as the type of fighter he views himself as. Tarver was confident and believed in himself when he called out and went up against RJJ. To me Guerrero is an opportunist, I feel bad for his wife and he has a tremendous story but my auntie got cancer, should I call out Floyd lol.

My issue with him is he was talking all this big shit until he had that patch of bad luck and his wife got ill, not to be insensitive but everybody got a story. It's someone boxing right now with a better "story" then his, should he get a big fight? He should choose another route to do his bidding for a big fight because I get the feeling it's falling on deaf ears. His power is crap at 147 and I don't think he'd last against a mid tier WW

In the end it's all subjective but he doesn't deserve a big fight at all. Not with Floyd, Cotto, Manny, nobody...not until he starts beating decent opposition.

tarver was more than delusional according to many at the time. i can recall merchant and several others sounding very cynical in response to him calling roy out. no one gave him a chance or thought he could win.

as for guerrero...he really didn't talk big before his wife was sick. he didn't call anyone out before that i can recall. i remember hearing about him sparring with pac and holding his own. i think the injury, combined with his wife's illness made him realize it's now or never so that's when he started trying to talk his way into the fight with floyd. i don't necessarily believe he's using his wife's story to get ahead either. that's the network that's selling that story to create ratings.

they thought tarver had no shot cause he got outboxed easily by harding. He avenged that loss by ko though. left hand was vicious.

I think Merchant and the gang thought this due to this aura of invincibility that was around Roy at the time, but looking back on it, the writing was on the wall for him to get beat. His run at 175 was never that impressive to me

And that's what I have a problem with, Guerrero is a solid fighter. I like watching him fight, just not at 147. I think the networks are the reason these fighters act the way they do, every fighters goal is to get on TV, then onto ESPN or one of those main event cards, then onto HBO or Showtime and the end goal is PPV. The problem is the 2 big networks pic and choose who they air and who they want to puush and it's usually some "sensational" story behind them

Fighters like Guerrero should get dates due to skill
