I thought Mares had an automatic clause for a rematch in the contract? Velez is a tough opponent, IDK how this one goes, it could backfire on Mares

Velez probably petitioned the WBC for his elimination fight first. The WBC may not have wanted to wait for Velez to get contender elimination status.. I learned the WBC rules cannot force a rematch by-passing a mandated challenger. Unless the mandated challenger agrees to step aside. The WBC Board of Governors only recommends immediate rematches if the first fight is controversial in some way, or there is a huge demand by the public to do the rematch. The board probably believes that Mares-Gonzalez II does not fall into those categories. It is still up to the promoters to make the fight happen. It sounds like this Velez is tough. It actually might make MORE sense to do this elimination fight first, as Mares got blown out by Gonzalez so quickly. Velez could win the eliminator fight and I think he might! How much does Mares have left against a big puncher? We need this elimination fight to see the answer!

Mares needs to prove he is not shot by fighting this elimination first and winning.

I don't think it was as simple as that; it appears that Mares reportedly gave some lame excuse about having some injury that somehow/mysteriously went away just in time to make a fight with Velez but not even bother to entertain the Gonzalez rematch..........................things that make you go hmmmmmmm!!
