This has been argued, but Ray Robinson is from Detroit... not New York Emmanuel Steward said that both Floyd Mayweather and James Toney frequented Detroit often in their careers despite being from outside the city.. particulary Mayweather as a youngster it should be noted that Lennox Lewis went to another level when he ventured into Detroit and got down with Emmanuel Steward. prior to that he was a basic Euro-style fighter. I recall guys from Kronk who I knew begging me because of my size to go spar with him... i didn't want to be the one to point that out...but technically, neither he nor joe louis were born in detroit. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif) they did start boxing there though. quillen was born in ann arbor...he moved to ny. i may be wrong...but i think chris byrd was born in chicago and moved to michigan. i was under the impression that lennox was born in the uk...moved to canada and repped them in the olympics....trained in the u.s. and is of jamaican descent. |

You're right about Lewis. lewis was born in west ham, london, england... and ray robinson...aka...walker smith. he was born in ailey, georgia. and joseph louis barrow was born in lafayette, alabama. and even though i don't believe he's proven to be any where near great at this point...peter quillen was born in grand rapids michigan. |

I agree yet Lennox Lewis spent considerable time in Detroit with Emmanuel Steward where he honed his skills... No doubt. I wrote a piece on Lewis during the summer. Shameless plug...Lennox Lewis - Tales of Olympic Glory |
