Desperate times call for desperate measures and if you're a 41-year-old future Hall-of-Fame boxer hoping to land a meaningful fight in the wasteland known as the heavyweight division, times are indeed desperate. According to reports, James "Lights Out" Toney has decided to temporarily hang up his boxing gloves in order to move forward with a career in mixed martial arts. UFC President Dana White has confirmed that the boxing legend has signed a multi-fight deal with the UFC.

I think you'll get a TON of MMA fans saying "See! A hall of fame boxer can't last in the octagon! MMA RULES!" Even though you're right in that it's a stupid conclusion to draw, people will draw it nonetheless.

I think this may be what White is trying to do. Historically boxing and MMA are and should remain two different sports. Boxers should stick to boxing, and MMA should stick to MMA. There's too many differences when you try to mix the two sports. James is not an MMA guy. He could get hurt in there, badly.

Dana White used to box himself. I doubt his sole reason for signing James Toney is to embarrass boxing. He's signing Toney because Toney is a Hall-of-Fame boxer, and one of, if not THE most talented fighters of our generation. Toney was hounding Dana to fight for the UFC to boot. I don't think it is really too fair to start heaping shit on White and start pretending like this was his master plan to embarrass boxing.
