Who cares?

I'm happy for him that he's getting the opportunity to challenge himself at this point in his career. At 41, most athletes are just wasting time in between doctor appointments...James on the other hand, is attempting to compete at a different sport. Good for him, I hope he does well.

James Toney fans care goddangit!

Nah but I see what you're saying. I just see very LOW chances of him succeeding at this endeavor, especially at 41 now that you mention it. Plus, a bad JT loss, ESPECIALLY after all the shit he talks, will just make boxing look bad in the whole "Boxing vs MMA" debate.

I'll keep it simple.

This is an embarrassment for all parties involved, especially Dana White.

Toney will be on his feet all of 30 seconds in his first fight before being taken down. Safe bet? Dana puts him in with a grappler for the first fight (someone like Jake "The Irish Blanket" O'Brien). Submission, decision, whatever. This isn't going to go well.

This wouldn't have gone well when James was at 160 or 168. Now, it's just going to be awful and I, for one, refuse to watch it. If by some miracle he does well, I'll catch it on a replay and eat a hearty helping of crow.

How will boxing look bad? James is fighting in the octagon right?

For all I know, Mark Hunt is the only MMA heavyweight to try his luck at boxing...unsuccessfully. KJ Noons didn't make MMA look bad when he lost to a nobody last September in a boxing match.

There really is NO COMPARISON with sport versus sport...all we can do is be happy that James gets to try to accomplish the elusive crossover. It's not everyday that a boxer as likable and GREAT as James Toney puts it all on the line for a challenge like this. I truly hope that he succeeds. But either way, at least MMA fans will get to know and appreciate one of boxing's colorful gems...Lights Out.

That's the thing, I'm not sure that even then they will appreciate him. We will see though.

Ya know what?

He might do alright until they put him in with a shooting, grappling beast...I say knock 'em out if you can, James...

I think you'll get a TON of MMA fans saying "See! A hall of fame boxer can't last in the octagon! MMA RULES!" Even though you're right in that it's a stupid conclusion to draw, people will draw it nonetheless.

That's really what I meant by it. Not to say that this is some epic battle of "boxing vs MMA" but casual fans will make it out to be one, and in their minds, it'll give them justification to say MMA>Boxing, which I think will make boxing be the brunt of many stupid conclusions.

But looking at it the way you do, I can see why you'd see this as a positive thing for JT. I guess I would sorta agree, but not so much only because there's such a low chance in him being successful.

It looked like Mercer said to himself, "Did this muthafucka just kick me?" as if he didn't know he was in a MMA match.

Do you really care what the idiots think? REALLY?!? LOL

History won't remember them, but it will definitely remember that James Toney tried his luck in the Octagon. Boxing Greats HAVE done worse...Muhammed Ali fought a professional wrestler. Joe Louis was a greeter at a fucking CASINO!

This ain't a bad way to go out...IF this is James' way of going out.

Here's a better version of the video The CEO posted...lol...I've been waiting to post this... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)

Wow.

Could this be the first time we see Toney seriously hurt?

I certainly hope so.

White is using Toney to mock boxing while making a few bucks...and it's going to work.

Well boxing deserves it. Excluding the megafights that rarely materialise & usually fall through boxing has pretty much lost me as a fan. At least in the UFC you get stacked PPV cards & the fights are well matched.

Never thought I would say that either.
