apparently if you're a very popular fighter fighting at welter then you get to fight for a diamond belt if no other belts are on the line. because there has to be some kind of belt on the line so that the sanctioning bodies can interject themselves in the fight somewhere. it's sooooo stupid. it's like a belt designed for the champion of the ignorant and gullible. thoughts?

WBC President Jose Sulaiman, upon hearing that the bout between Floyd Mayweather and Shane Mosley will not be for Mosley’s WBA welterweight title, has announced that the WBC will offer the WBC Diamond Belt to the Mayweather-Mosley winner and be recognized as WBC Diamond world champion, being certain that if Mayweather wins he’ll proudly accept the belt. “In history, there has been only one world champion who has won the WBC Diamond Belt, the idol of the Philippines and the world Manny Pacquiao,” said Sulaiman in a statement. “The winner of Mayweather vs. Mosley also deserves to be crowned as WBC Diamond world champion.” If the WBC is not allowed to present the belt in the ring, they will do so in the locker room of the winner.
—– What’s interesting about this decision is the fact that although Manny Pacquiao already holds the WBC Diamond Belt world championship at welterweight, Mayweather-Mosley will not be for an “interim” WBC Diamond Belt world championship. In essence, the WBC would be awarding the same belt and same title to another fighter in the same division as Pacman. Bull-shit |

The funny thing about this is if there is a sanctioning fee Lil Floyd will still tell them to shove it up their ass.
I'm not a big Floyd fan but this is a stand I love and can really get behind. Fuck all the corrupt sanctioning bodies. |

It's like they're gifting a belt nobody wants and another fighter already has. They're making it worthless by giving it multiple "champions" at the same time. |

Is there a sanctioning fee for the Diamond belt? No, It's just some commemorative troophy that the WBC presents to two fighters who fight in a super-fight. It was supposed to be for two prestigious fighters who box above their weight class. Winner gets the trophy. Thing is, I don't think Mayweather-Mosley is a superfight. It should be on HBO. It may strain the budget but Mayweather-Mosley on HBO and than just do the one trophy belt (non-sanctioned) for the winner of Mayweather-Mosley vs. Pacquiao. They just want to give a commemorative belt to the winner of a big fight. Sometimes the WBC just gives belts to longtime members of the WBC for strong commitments to the organization for many years. However, I believe the belts should only be for world championship fights and nothing else. Jack |

It's funny (probably more pathetic) that they have to resort to following a fighter to the dressing room afterward to give this belt away, just so they can say they were involved in the fight.
