What is the criteria to be considered a real boxing fan as opposed to being a Pactard or Flomo. It seems if u mention either one of these guys u automatically get labeled. I am a Floyd Mayweather but I consider myself a real boxing fan b/c Floyd isn't the only fighter i watch. He's my favorite right now but by no means does that mean once his done fighting all stop watching boxing. I don't consider myself a boxing historian b/c I have recently be come a die hard over the last 5 or 6 years but I was always a casual fan. Is a real boxing fan supposed to be able to recall facts from the past or just have a good understanding of boxing and follow the sport. I wanna know what u guys think. Intelligent responses please

I agree, I'm asian and I almost don't want to bring up Pacquiao in a boxing conversation cause I'll immediately get labelled. I watched boxing long before Pacman had his coming out party against Barrera.

well if all of your posts include Pac or May then it would appear that you are only a fan of those fighters. If you watch other fights and follow the sport outside of those two and have a general interest in the sport then i would consider you a boxing fan. There are levels of Pactards and Flomos, you can be a boxing fan and be a flomo or a pactard. I hate both of those words by the way, they are both fucking gay...

There's different levels of distinction I think,

Those who name-call against Floyd or Manny may not be strong boxing fans OR they may be boxing fans who are just so obsessed with either fighter, that nothing said in a conversation, or on a message board is going to change their opinion. It's like in politics where a group of people go for one party or another and refuse to change, no matter what the party does. The name-callers who love one fighter over the other, are unlikely to change no matter what the boxers say or do.

But it's not just Manny and Floyd. Ali had supposed "haters and nuthuggers too." Tyson, even after the Holyfield II ear-biting incident had people who still supported him. True "nuthugging" distorts factual assessments of evidence and abilities. An obsessed fan of Mayweather or Pacquaio, can often be very, very objective and factual about other fighters as well. The same with haters of these boxers.

The most popular fighters P4P in boxing. The most popular athletes in all sports are going to have their lovers and haters who's views are so polarized one way or the other that you can't change their behavior.

Look, it's simple.

If you're prepared to call your fighter on some bullshit, then you're not a Flomo or Pactard.

Case in point. Shane Mosley used to be my favourite fighter. He reminded me of Ray Robinson, in style, and I wanted him to be the real ATG of his era.

Then he turned in two bullshit performances against Forrest (I was prepared to forgive the first one if he turned it around in the rematch, Robinson style).

After that, I couldn't understand how he was gifted a DLH rematch, when he didn't deserve it, and he even got the dodgy decision, which he didn't deserve.

NOW...if I'd been the Shane Mosley equivalent of a Flomo, I'd have swore blind he was butted in the first Forrest fight, deserved the verdict in the rematch, and kicked DLH's ass, even though deep down in my subconscious I didn't believe it. I DIDN'T, BECAUSE I'M NOT A SHANE FAN, I'M A BOXING FAN. I'll call bullshit on my favourite fighters if I think it's bullshit they're mixing up.

Now all of the guys who say "I'm a boxing fan first, Floyd/Pac fan second" just don't have the powers to be neutral. They will swear blind that everything Floyd and Pac do is justified. If you have excused Floyd for every bullshit career decision he's made, then, YES, you are a Flomo. If you blindly defend Pacquiao taking on Floyd's leftovers, then YES, you are Pactard.

Simples.

Great post Black!

Black just added more good points to what I said above. If you are totally obsessed with any fighter, it is very hard, if not impossible to be objective with what they say or do.

Another distinction is that fight historians, who are sadly fading away due to age or death, they often seemed to be a little more objective and professional in their writing than some people in a message board conversation. However, that's a moot issues as well, because there was no Internet technology during boxing's heyday years, that I often refer to as the 50's to the 80's. So we don't know how the best boxing writers and historians would have used Internet technology to express views of the fighters.

The information today and responses is so much faster and reaches millions of people much quicker. I think negative opinions and name-calling against fighters is more prevalent today than in the past. Old school traditionalists probably wrote with more intellect and sophistication than today's writers. Today's boxing writers can't hold a candle to past generations. However, that's nobody's fault. It's just changing and reacting to changing worlds, and changing times.

Look as long as you are a boxing fan first and a Floyd Mayweather fan second you should be OK.

Jack and Black are absolutely right! I like both fighters, but they are both good for bullshitting from time to time. There are some people who are absolutely obsessed no matter what, and it's sickening.

Hey, I have an idea Jack...whenever a new user registers, they should be subjected to a mandatory 1-week "Pacquiao/Mayweather" thread, before they even get to view the real board. That way, we can find out if they are Flomos or Pactards before they permeate into the real board with their disease. All vets should be allowed access to that trial thread, so they can blaze 'em all up and run 'em away from the site...or at least make them reconsider their argument before entering the board! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)

I came up with this Saturday night when I checked my Facebook and noticed how many people were WAAAY behind on the whole issue, and some of them were ready to go tooth-to-nail to prove their point (IMG:style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)
