Usage of weights can be great to a boxers training. It adds spice to the training and makes the body work different. If you stick to the same training time after time, your body can get used to it and adapt. Which is why I think adding in weights (as an extra, not instead of) into sessions can be beneficial and keep the body guessing.
He obviously wasn't doing it to gain muscle....its was all fast twitch muscle fibre increasing exercises.
