Full Version: The USA-U.K/British "Rivalry"

The CEO
You can thank Calzaghe's latest bullsh*t for the following...

Calzaghe: "Americans Ignorant, Euro Fighters Are Better"

I have a few things to say concerning the so called U.S.A.-U.K. "rivalry" in Boxing....

The ONLY reason it even exists is due to the actions of the U.K. fans...predominantly the British ones....why?....because the U.K./British Boxing scene basically doesn't occur to the American Boxing scene as rivals or competition...and as The History of Boxing tells us...for the most part, they are NOT in our league and SHOULDN'T occur to us as such. In other words....we have every right to NOT be concerned with them...and believe me...they wouldn't be concerned with us if the roles were reversed.

This genuine and warranted lack of acknowledgement of them as a threat makes their blood BOIL...which is totally understandable. To be honest...I have sympathy for them....as being in that position must really, REALLY suck....knowing they can't compare to us and having to run around screaming for accolades and attention....and when they do that enough...acting a fool and touting their fighters to the extreme ENOUGH...we, the American Boxing fans and our prime fighters, fight their sparks with fire and remind them of exactly where they and their best fighters truly stand....

That being said...I totally understand and advocate them competing in general...being competitive is an essential quality to have when wanting to gain recognition and/or success...but I'm saying that THEY are the ones who start all this nonsense and bring out our bad sides with their overly nationalistic and obnoxious points of view....that....along with their blind bias, envy, and overall insecurity towards America is pretty much what fuels this feud and makes us act accordingly....but like I said....this really isn't a "feud"...it's more like a complete and utter mismatch.

It's almost like a barracuda going after a Great White Shark...which you would rarely, and probably never, see...because the barracuda knows the Great White can easily swing around and rip it to shreds at any given moment....you see...the barracuda, unlike the insane fans I'm referring to, KNOWS its role and is fine with it...it gets its food and respect here and there...but it wouldn't DARE attack something it innately recognizes as considerably bigger and better....

So I pose the question..."Why?"...why waste your time and energy acting this way? Why do you peck at The Sleeping Giant's feet? Do you not know that America historically AND presently owns you?...and if you DO know this....why are you fighting the feeling?...it would be much easier for you and better for your reputation if you just accepted it...because no matter what you and your fighters EVER say or do....England, or ANY other country for that matter, will NEVER replace The United States as THE Mecca AND Standard of Boxing Greatness.

Now...I know what I've just typed is going to upset some of you...but I am merely speaking the truth from the heart...and believe it or not...I am only trying to help you and the Boxing community become a better place....

I often think of how wonderful it would be if more U.S. and British fans could coexist without all the bullsh*t and rationally assess Boxing and the fighters together....

Sincerely,
SKULLSPLITTER - The CEO

In my most proper british accent, I'd like to raise a pint of Guiness to the C.E.O. and proclaim, "Here here!"

Seriously, I have nothing against the Brits. They make awesome rock n' roll, write excellent mystery thrillers, and Kate Winslett is a terrific actress and much hotter than she's given credit for.

But they (or you, if you're reading and you're British) can be some annoying sons of bitches when it comes to the fight game.

Here's my story:

It begins as I deboard a plane at Las Vegas airport on the night of December 7, 2007. I was in town for the Mayweather-Hatton fight. Though I was unable to secure tickets to the event itself, I was thrilled just to be a part of the weekend's surrounding festivities. I arrived with my Floyd Mayweather hatred fully intact. I prepared to vehemently root against him, and loudly cheer for the common man's man, Ricky Hatton.

But then checking into my room at the Excalibur I heard voices in the lobby. Loud voices. Singing. No, more like chanting. It didn't take long to recognize the tune I'd heard before on my TV. "There's only ooooone Ricky Hatton!" I smiled. Good times. The sounds of men drinking beer together, and I approved. But motherfuck if over the next 24 hours I didn't want to put my hands around someone's throat just a little bit tighter with each successive eruption of that fucking song. Die you cocksucking wankers!!! But I still hated Mayweather, so I still intended to root for Hatton.

The night of December 8 my friends and I entered the ballroom at the Mandalay Bay excited to watch the big fight on giant screens, surrounded by thousands of others there to do the same. The majority of the crowd was British, which was cool with me. The song was still being sung from time to time, but as discussed already, hearing it still couldn't sway my personal taste for the two fighters involved. The undercard fights came and went, the time spent watching them really more time spent gettng good and ripped. The big fight was imminent. I was stoked.

Then some girl comes on the screen and begins singing the U.S National Anthem. And the crowd in the ballroom erupts in a sea of boos. My friends and I looked at each other. You could feel the rest of the Americans in the ballroom doing the same. There weren't a ton of us, probably 25% of the room or so. But slowly, one by one we began to rise. Never a patriot by any means, I felt almost embarrassed at my showing of National pride. But like the other Americans in the room, I felt like I had to. We were compelled. And the crowd booed louder. I turned around and looked at a man sitting two rows behind me who was booing as loudly as anyone in the room. And he looked back at me with an expression of pure hatred. Really motherfucker? So it's not just about Mayweather? This has to be about you versus us? Well that's just fine, cause even though I hate Floyd Mayweather's personality and like Ricky Hatton's, I know good and damn well that Mayweather's the vastly superior fighter and is going to straight whip your boy's fuckin' arse.

---[A quick aside... After the fight for the next several hours that we were out at the casinos, and even a couple of times the next afternoon after we'd woken up, my friend Steve kept repeating the same general phrase to himself:
"Why did you make us do that to you? We didn't want to have to do that to you. You made us do it."]---

So just like that, for the next 45 minutes, my allegiance changed. And I and my friends all rooted for that sack of shit Floyd Mayweather. Not because we wanted to. But because we had to. We were compelled. They made us do it.

The moral of the story? There is no moral. But I haven't even gotten to the best part yet: Earlier in the day I put a few wagers on the fight. Nothing big, I'm not a rich man. Just $100 in total - $20 of which I put on Mayweather by KO 10.

It was a good night to be an American.

The best Brit in Britain is Thom Yorke. Roll Deep would probably be second I think.

CEO, sometimes a little venting is necessary. Healthy even, just to clear the pipes. I can't imagine anyone taking issue with this thread. If it wasn't for one of these gems every now and then who knows what sort of chaos might result?

PS - I will tell Steve you love him the next time I see him. He's an egomaniac, he likes hearing stuff like that.

After reading what Joe just said, all is I can say is I fn hate him. What an idiot for saying that. It is not the USA's fault you hid in your hometown for almost your whole career fighting less than spectacular competition. I like Roy Jones, I know alot don't, but I have never in my life wanted to see someone get KTFO like I want Joe to. Please by some miracle for just one night, let the old Roy Jones show up and totally embarrass and KO this fool. Even if you win Joe, you will never go down as ATG, you are fooling no one by retiring undefeated.

Then you can go back home and order your wife around some more to make you a sandwich, and watch your boys kick a soccer ball around.
ROLL DEEP
COuldn't open the link to see what Calzaghe said, but I'm sure I know what its about....he says that type of stuff a lot.

Firstly, from my experience, the English like to be English, the Welsh like to be Welsh, the Irish, Irish and the Scottish, Scottish. Not a lot of people I've met and know like to be lumped together under the label 'British', so on that note, it's my duty as an Englsihman to root against the Welsh.

The Welsh love sticking it to us in rugby, and we like to return the favour.

As far as Britian being a good boxing nation, yes, we are a good boxing nation (I know I've just said we like being independant, but I'll call us Britian for now).

Are we better than the US? No. Due to a few reason in my opinion. Obvioulsy we do have have a few standout boxers in recent times; Lennox Lewis, Nigel Benn, Naz, David Haye, Hatton.

The main reason we suffer imo is boxings popularity.

In England boxing is not that popular. For BIG fights like Hatton and Calzaghe, the build up will hardly make the back page. The report on the fight will have a token page or two, but England is FIRMLY rooted in Football/Soccer, Rugby, Cricket, Tennis, Athletics and Motor sports.....oh, and darts. It has been getting more popular recently though, but the public haven't a clue about boxing.

The thing that riles us English up is when the US instantly dismiss anyone from over here as Euro stiffs or Euro bums. And yes...it does annoy me too laugh.gif

I honeslty do think that boxing is changing.....with Europe getting stronger and stronger as it starts growing in popularity.

Btw, good comment "roll deep"

Lil's comment above couldn't have said it any better. This slapping SOB is slamming the US that he's reaching out to speaking negatively towards the US Olympic boxing team?? What a piece of work there. He needs to just focus on his fight with roy because after all, he himself doesn't even believe he beat Hopkins (his comment regarding "pitter patting" on the 24/7 series).

STEVENSKI
I have to say I get sick of the arrogant English attitude. One of my best friends talks a lot of shit about how great it is to be English & if that is the case then why has he lived in the best country on earth for 20 years & not England?

His belt buckle says it all "British by birth" "English by the grace of god".

Then again English are very zenophobic & regional. Northerners hate southerners etc & the poor bastards from the midlands are hated by everyone.

Then again Australia must be the best because we produce fighters that become undisputed champions & a few beltholders. P4P baby!!
STEVENSKI
Oh yeah Americans are ignorant as fuck (yes this is a blatant genralisation so sue me) & they prove it time & time again.
D-MARV
We as americans can be a little ignorant at times but the brits can be even more ignorant at times! Why British reporter actually put Calzaghe's name in with Sugar Ray Robinson! LOL
STEVENSKI
I admit it does not help the case when certain fighters get hailed as all that & then some Naz immediatley springs to mind. That said there are plenty of US fighters that are hailed as all that & get exposed such as Lacy.

What smacks of elitism is how Darchinyan gets little respect when he is undisputed champion of his division yet if Mijares won he would be hailed as a P4P hero.
The CEO
QUOTE(Fitz @ Nov 5 2008, 05:56 PM)
Isn't this the same argument the American's don't like when soccer fans respond to American's who say soccer is a pussy sport? When soccer fans say that there sport is so big and your opinions are so small and insignificant it literally doesn't matter because it's the best sport in the world? lol.

Nothing against you, but I always knew you had a thing about Euro fighters, haha. Also back on topic, I'm not saying American boxers suck or anything, as they do produce the best, but I'm going to have to agree with Calazghe in thinking fighters and fans from the states are a lot of times ignorant to fighters that fight outside the states. This isn't any news to the people on the outside though.

Well I personally certainly don't give a shit about the U.S.'s soccer dominance or obvious lack of it ....lol...and stop lying to the people about me having a thing....lol.....I've liked and/or respected many fighters that hail from "over there" or from other countries.....Lewis, Tszyu, The Klits, Duddy, Darch now, even Abraham a little....just to name a few fairly recent ones from the top of my head....

and remember...I was basically talking about the British fighters and their hordes of dumb and wild fans....it's pretty much all their fault many Americans don't like their fighters...

This is not true. The reason Darchinyan doesn't get respect is because he fights at Super-Flyweight. Sad but true I guess. And the win over Mijares was his first real BIG win...so he still has to do more to make his name bigger. I've repeatedly called crabstyle Vic the "truth" after his win over Mijares because he proved himself that night because I'm really fan and I wont get blinded by my hate towards certain crude fighters. I would love for him and the lower weights to get more attention and credit instead of the crappy lame Heavyweights with the Klitschko Brothters.
The Ollie Reed Fan Club
Having lived in England for 7 years I understand how insular and one eyed the English can be.

The best headline I ever saw in The Sun was for the 2nd Bruno-Tyson fight.

"Give the Yank a Spank Frank" Ha ha fucking classic!! And we all know what happened in that fight.

I think the reason they get so worked up is because they NEVER win anything. It is the THOUGHT of winning something that excites the Brits the most. They have to be the most losing nation in the history of sports. They invent everything and then get their arses handed to them by the colonial countries they introduced the sports to. I think this has proved to be a major mind fuck for the English.

If you thought they took the boxing seriously try standing in a pub in London when they lose in the quarters of a football World Cup.

Coming from a neutral standpoint I think American fans can be a little one eyed as well.

I suppose it's natural, the USA is the spiritual home of boxing. In NZ we have our national rugby team (The All Blacks) and we are fiercely protective of the belief that we have the best rugby team on the planet, at all times, ever, (even though we can't win a fucking World Cup for love nor money.)

Interestingly I do see major fights and big boxing events more and more taking place outside the States.

IF Hatton fights either De la Hoya or PBF again you can bet your bottom dollar it will take place in Britain.

Germany has cultivated a huge audience and I see Don King is taking another card back to China and I bet within 10 years a large majority of fights are taking place in Dubai, those guys are taking every major sport there. Basically the sport will follow the dollars and American fight fans are going to have to get used to more and more of the big fights moving offshore.

Whether a fighter has to 'come to the States' to prove himself may prove to be a thing of the past.

Oh and for the record I have in the past been a fan of Joe Calzaghe but when he sits in a 5 star suite America, about to fight in one of the most venerated boxing venues in history, being bankrolled by an American station and all he can do is insult his hosts, he needs his arse kicked.
blackbelt2003
Without getting too deep here, as an English guy it's ingrained into us to be xenophobic.

Remember, it was only 100 years ago or so when, in the Victorian era, we had quite possibly the most glorious world empire the world had seen. Asia, Africa, Europe, America...you name it, we owned some of it.

We kicked ass in battle, we were the most modern nation in the world, we pioneered in, well...everything.

100 years later, we've been reduced, through politics, the annexation of our colonies and war, to pretty much nothing. Europe has swallowed us up, and our politicians have allowed foreign immigrants to devour our national identity...all in the space of a century or less.

That's why Britain is so fucked up mentally. How much does it suck that the country who invented modern boxing is now a league behind the Philippines for chrissakes!

That's why you get screaming, moronic Hatton and Calzaghe fans.

I apologise for them on behalf of my countrymen. They can't help it. They're British.

There is no rivalry. None at all.

The fans who travel to watch Calzaghe and Hatton box in America are football fans. It's football NOT soccer but that's another argument. They get pumped up on the beer and the atmosphere but they are no better judges of a boxers talent than 95% of the mugs who post on that other forum you post at C.E.O.

Boxing in America is in a poor state right now with nothing good on the horizon. Yes, they have had far, far more better fighters than the Brits will ever have, but nobody has ever said otherwise.

Where are the Brits on THIS forum who talk so much shit anyway? I haven't seen them around here since the British boxing forum was destroyed by that Spud tosser.

The Sun newspaper is a terrible example to bring up. It's a tabloid, it's headlines are written to hype up people who don't have a fucking clue about anything. Its stories, whether sport or in general, are normally bollocks in any case.

True boxing fans recognise true class regardless of where the fighter is from. I don't have a British fighter in my top 10 favourites but if I did it wouldn't be because he was British. It's good to know what some people think of the Brits on here though. Nice eye-opener that.
