Goossen Tutor Promotions was informed today by Dr. Doug Frankel that heavyweight Tony 'The Tiger' Thompson is suffering from acute bronchitis and was given immediate orders to stay out of the gym and subsequently his plans to enter the ring next weekend (December 13) at the Morongo Casino Resort & Spa to face three-time world champion, James Toney, (70-6-3, 43 KOs) in a scheduled twelve-rounder.Upon receiving the news, Goossen Tutor Promotions matchmaker, Tom Brown acted quickly and replaced Thompson, with former world title challenger, Fres 'The Big O' Oquendo (29-4, 18 KOs). "I was training for a fight that was recently cancelled, and when I was informed that I had the chance to fight Toney, there was zero hesitation," said an elated Oquendo. "This was the opportunity I was looking for. It gets me right back into a position to challenge for a World Title." The second featured televised bout will showcase 2004 Olympic gold medalist and WBO #4/WBC #5 super middleweight Andre Ward (16-0, 11 KOs) in a ten-rounder against Estaban 'Rocky' Camou (23-4, 19 KOs).

Good thing for Toney! this is a more winnable fight for him.

I feel like I have not seen Oquendo fight in years.

I'm glad Oquendo got this fight..I know hes been training for a fight for a while now since I last talked to him..Oquendo is in shape all the time,he's lookin real trim these days..I think he'll put it to Toney pretty good..This is a weird match up though style wise..

Yes very interesting fight Jonny. To me where Fres falls down is the mental aspect, I'm not sure he's got a big fight mentality. To me this is an area where James has a significant advantage and can take Fres out of his gameplan.

I'll take James by UD (hell he's not gonna get the knockout is he.)

One of the best ways I think this fight could be best described would be Byrd/Oquendo..Although Byrd had more speed than Toney does now..The reason I compare this to that fight is because of defense for the most part and counter punching..Byrd and Toney are 2 of the best defensive fighters ever at heavyweight..Fres has the speed to get in a couple more shots than normal heavyweights would on both these guys..Toney's stamina hasn't been too great these days and I know Fres will be able to be able to keep a pace through out the whole fight..Like I said,Fres is looking trim these days and to think he is going into a serious camp on top of where he is at now,he'll look extremely good..When I first met Fres I was shocked cause I weigh 210 and he looked about the same as I did and he weighed like 220-230..I just hope Fres doesn't get robbed if he really wins this fight like he did against Byrd..

Toney should have 1 main focus for this fight like he should for every fight, get in serious shape..I want him at 220..Not gonna happen, but we can hope..If he can get in serious shape,he has the opportunity to bring major noise to the heavyweight division even at his age..We all see the future as grim for him but if he gets in shape,he is opening everything up..If Toney is in shape,I only see the Klitchkos beating him at heavyweight..I think Toney would whoop Valuev really really bad if he was in top shape..

Yeah as I said Jonny the physical side of Fres is no concern, in fact he has enough tools to have already won a strap by now.

I question is mental ability.

Now I know you're a boxer yourself so you might argue this a bit but the maxim with most sport is that is 80% mental 20% physical. Evander is a great example of this, there were plenty of times where he just literally WILLED himself to win.

a guy like Toney, he's a natural born fighter, he bleeds boxing, now Fres I'm sure he is a very hard worker and all the rest but from what I've seen i'm not 100% convinced he has the killer instinct to get over the top.

this fight may well prove it, but I think James has too many old school tools and old school moves for Fres, especially the mental side.

We shall see, I know you'll be pulling for Fres since he's a friend but if you're being brutally honest about his career you'd have to say he hasn't delivered on his potential.

Toney's punches are much heavier than Byrds though

This has the potential to be the most boring fight of the year.
Two counter-punchers. What a barn-burner.
At this point in Toney's career, I wouldn't even call this fight a chess-match.

I would have liked to see how Toney dealt with a guy that size. If he won a decision against Thompson, maybe one of the Klits would have set up a fight with him. Fres Oquendo does nothing for him but get him a few rounds... Funny though, Fres may beat him, now that I think of it...

For sure! I've been waiting about 5 years now to see JT in with a very tall, super longed reach opponent...to see how that size difference comes into play.

At last I thought I had gotten it....only to have the rug pulled out from under me.

Fres is still not an easy win.....he is pretty quick and will use a jab, and he has a little pop....

For a quick substitution....he's not a bad choice....but I still would have liked them to sub a tall huge guy instead....like McBride or Fields would have been nice.

I agree with ya on your comments about Fres..He a real cool, nice guy..Fres will give almost everyone problems because of his unique style just like Toney so I'm not sure how I see this fight playing out..Toney has more skills no doubt but Fres is still looking fresh for the most part and still has his speed..

I've wanted to see it since the Holyfield victory. I had tickets to the fight against Jameel McCline before James blew out his achilles.

Hopefully if he gets past Fast Fres we'll get to see him in there with one of the taller heavies.

JT weighed in at 230. Not great but shows he's working to get his weght down.

Hopefully, JT has a nice performance and the fight doesn't suck, so he can work towards a title shot.

Yeah, not too bad. I am looking forward to see how he looks tomorrow. I really do not know what to expect, especially since I can not remember the last time I saw Oquendo fight. The worst part is I have my theater room being used tomorrow night by my in-laws for a movie and then a card party. So I am forced to watch it in my living room. And that goes for the Hopkins-Holt card too. cray.gif

Room is 21'x31' with three rows of seating with 106" screen and the set up is pretty nice. I built it back in 2004-2005. Too many details, I will figure out how to post pictures real soon and show you some pictures.

Sweet. Got any ButtKicker's under the seating?

230 is still way too heavy for James. He needs to get to 218.
Still, this will probably be a really boring fight with the loser claiming they were robbed, but the fans not really caring too much because of how boring the fight was.

No. But I do have (2) DIY subwoofer boxes that measure about 4'x3'x2' that have each box has (2) 18" subs in them. Each box weighs about 300lbs!!! They are each powered by a behringer pro audio amp. My theater is not attached to my house, but the bass shakes my whole house when I am showing it off to people. My wife has yelled at me more than once for it being too loud. laugh.gif I do not always listen to it at crazy levels. I never took any measurements, but the bass is ridiculous. Will post some pictures soon.

Agreed that its still to heavy but its finally going the right way. haha

Hopefully, he has learned something from the 2nd Peter fight where he couldn't do what he is used to doing in the ring because his weight wa too high and his balance was fucked.

Awesome. You should really consider some ButtKickers... ever demo them before? Would work out great with the wife factor since they only transfer energy directly into what they are attached to, so she wouldn't hear them even two feet away. Those boxes sound like beasts!

Funny you mention the buttkickers, cause when I designed and built my room, I was going to pre-wire under my front row and two lifts for future possibility of using Buttkickers. For some reason I did not, I guess I had so many other things to do that I decided to just drop that idea. I pretty much built the whole room myself, I did get a little help here and there though. And no I never did demo them, I never experienced them, so I would not know what to expect.

My one friend designed the boxes and I built them, I have some pictures of the build of the boxes too. I look forward to getting some pictures up to hear some impressions.

Thanks for the compliment 3KING3!

I converted my 50'x40' garage into two sections, my gym and theater room. It sits next to my house. Don't worry, I have another garage I use. I am a HUGE a/v nut! I always wanted a theater room, so my wife told me if I sold my motorcycle, I could build one. We had our first kid at the time, she did not like motorcycles because of the danger factor. I was working construction for about ten years, my brother owns the company. Anyway, I made decent money plus my wife makes pretty good money, so we decided to convert our garage. I saved a ton of money doing most of the work myself too. Plus with my brothers company I can get pretty much any tool I need.

I have had the gym there for a couple of years too, recently have re-done it though, and still not done. I actually have been training people for years, and right now I have alot of mma guys come and I help out on the boxing part. By no means am I an expert trainer, I did fight as an amateur, so I just try to try to teach from I have learned from past trainers I had. I do not charge either, I just like to work out with others, makes it way more fun.

I am actually going back to college next semester(have two years previous exp.), I left my brothers company, I want to get my degree and change my job direction. So my best advice to you would be make sure you FINISH college, and make sure you do what you love or like a lot.

We had our rough times early on, she was in college and I was pursuing boxing and just working. We were going in different directions. But things worked out great soon after that, and every day I am grateful for what she does for me. She has ALWAYS been there for me and believed in me with whatever. She works real hard and is just the most beautiful person I ever met. I know I sound like such a pussy. All my friends absolutely love her and tell me how lucky I am.

Well, as I type this right know I am recovering from my second shoulder surgery I reinjured from training this summer. I almost died in 2000 when the hospital missed stomach pains that were actually my appendix burst, I was sent home. Later that night I was rushed to another hospital where the surgeon told me I was lucky to still be alive. I had a hernia while training also. My first shoulder surgery was back in 2002. And the last time I was in the best shape of my life and had my first pro fight lined up, my Dad passed three weeks before the fight. It has been down hill ever since(boxing). I have tried many times to start up again but just do not have the same intensity. This summer while training, which I still do(just not near as serious), I was doing alot of sparring and feeling very sharp and strong and decided to maybe just turn pro to get it out of my system once and for all, and then the shoulder problem occurred and just last week had the surgery. Sorry for rambling on and boring you, I did leave alot out.

I fought at 130lbs and 139lbs, and I have crazy power. I used to watch fights over and over trying moves all the time. I would always try Toneys roll the right hand and counter with his right hand. I liked the way Chavez used to throw his right over lazy jabs. But by FAR my best combo was Micky Wards left to the head then left down stairs. I have dropped so many people with that in sparring. Lot of good times.

Thanks for listening.

Boxing is also my total passion & love....My whole family are basically big boxing fans and I've been a fan since I was a small kid. I also box amateur currently I have 4 wins 0 losses 0 wins by KO. I fought at 140 but now I'm up to 165 I'm a lazy fuck right now and I'm going to start losing weight so I can fight again. I try to really emulate Mayweather style, I'm basically a jab-run-lay on the ropes defend, counter type guy I don't think I'm strong enough or hit hard enough to mix it up. I love to work the body though but I'm pretty much an outside fighter and I was actually rocked bad in my first fight and the ref gave me a standing 8 count but I was able to win anyway lol

Listen up man, you are not young forever. You sound like me when I was young, I would fight in stretches, and then get heavy and take time off. I have lots of excuses too, but in the end I REALLY WISH I would have dedicated myself better when I was younger. Then later on I had my string of injuries. Get your ass back in the gym, don't waste your love and passion putting off til later. I always talk to my nephews who are good athletes in there respective sports, to always believe in yourself and you have to work hard, your natural abilities only take you so far. You win the fight in your preparation.

Just by reading your posts you are very knowledgeable and passionate, I hope to hear that you will be fighting again soon.

Yo I respect that. You could have sugar coated your fight game but you was straight up and honest about it. Anybody could have made up a bunch of lies to make theirselves sound macho but you shared your strenghts along with your flaws.

Much Respect from Me...but you still have a fetish for calf muscles. laugh.gif sorry man, you know I had to throw that one in there.

My weaknesses in the ring would have to be my stamina(which is always improving each day) and I don't throw many left hooks..I got a lot of power in my straight right and right uppercut..My right uppercut actually closed a dudes eye completely for 2 weeks and left it really black..I normally only throw left hooks on the inside if I do..
