Full Version: Wow, Nate Campbell came in overweight

I like Nate Campbell a lot. But man if you're going to be as vocal as he has been about the lack of professionalism shown by Guzman, you GOTTA walk the talk because the spotlight will shine back brighter on you.

This reminds of when Chico blasted JLCastillio about not making weight only to go through the same thing with his 3rd fight with Joel..

Bro, do you think don King could be fucking him on the scales? King promoting this and Nate broke free of him. I hear there's some real beef there.

As we speak (as I type), I am literally on the phone w my Bet US account rep trying to get loot transferred into my acct, as Sportsbook already pulled the fight (save for the props) from their site (I guess pending Nate getting back on the scale).

So does this mean he loses his belts? Dang, I like that dude.

I really defended Nate hard when Guzman came in overweight and now I feel like a total doofus.

I never thought about what happened between him and King, wow. Nate presents himself as extremely professional so it may be something to think about. Lets consider this, fighters KNOW before they step on that scale if they're overweight or not. A pound or two from the walk back to the hotel isn't much but 3 lbs (shocked look). Let me check something. Hm, I've only seen Funecka on youtube against Zahir Raheem but I checked his recent weights to see if he's come in at 133 and he hasn't. But its only been a pound differential the last two years with him.

I guess I'm saying that to say if the scales were rigged but then again all the other fighters would be impacted.

i just read the update that the titles are vacant for this. Again wow! Sucks to be Nate now

At least the fight is happening.
King Eugene
Damn Nate! Your not making it easy for some of your fans to back you when stuff like this happens.
kidbazooka1
Campbell f*cked up all the trash talking he did with Guzman came back to bite him in the ass big time.
King Eugene
Atleast Campbell is still fighting and not backing out for some ill reason.
Mean Mister Mustard
How will the weight loss affect him though? Plus he has to fight, he has no choice, he needs the money, plus he already lost his belt.

Nate released this threw One Punch over on the MB boards! I said I would have known & made weight if it were me by thurdays morning! It's about losing water weight! Anyhow!

My better judgement tells me to leave this alone, however Nate and I feel the fans deserve an explanation as to what occurred.

Nate did not "screw up". His weight was on target the entire camp. He came into fight week at 139, which is right where he is supposed to be (actually, he usually begins fight week at 140-141). However, on Wednesday and Thursday, when he typically drops the last 2-3 pounds, it simply wouldnt come off. It certainly wasnt for a lack of effort on Nate's part. He spent almost 4 hours yesterday in the steam room at Bally's, only to lose 1/4 pound. And all day today was spent trying to take off those last 3. At 36 though, his body simply said "thats it".

Nate will never attempt to make 135 again, even though there is still the possibility of getting the Barerra-Khan winner, or Marquez or something. His body just wont do it. After this fight, he is moving to 140, and there will be no future attempts to make 135, because going into a situation like that knowing full well that weight could be a problem would be disrespectful to the fans, the opponent, the promoter, and the network. This isnt like the Guzman situation. Guzman can make 135, and he just did recently. And Nate's biggest gripe with Guzman wasnt that he didnt make weight, it was that he wouldnt still fight over the weight.

Nate feels terrible that this occurred. We knew that going to 140 was inevitable, but he really thought he had 3 or 4 more fights before that move would be necessary. Thats not how it played out though. Mother Nature has her own schedule, and she doesnt really care what your own plans are.

But the fight is still on, and then Nate will be campaigning at 140. I know the haters will get a big laugh out of all this, but once Nate starts collecting belts at 140 we will see who's laughing then.

I don't buy his excuses one bit. He made it last fight, he could have made it again. Not saying it is not a struggle, just not buying all the excuses. Fighters make this choice to drain themselves to get to the lowest possible weight, now that he has missed the weight, I don't want to hear any excuses. After all the shit he talks too, I will laugh my ass off if he gets KO'd tomorrow. No, I am not a Nate Campbell fan.
KookedKrack
im not buying the excuses either especially after all the shit he gave Guzman and i think Guzman didn't fight because he was feeling sick or some shit which was why he didn't make weight if i remember right.

Enough is enough. They need to do weigh-ins the day of the fight. I'm tired of this weight draining bullshit and fighters not making weight.

In my opinion that would solve a lot of what I consider to be the bigger issues in boxing and thats guys fighting outside of the weight they should be fighting. That said, VERY wishful thinking.

I agree that Nate is at the age that it's harder for this to come off but that doesn't excuse any of what he said about Guzman and how he's in the same situation regardless of whether they're fighting or not.

The lesson it seems (especially after the late Chico) is if the fighter you fight doesn't make weight, don't go in the press, on blogs, etc talking shit because the same thing could happen to you, lol.

I agree. And if they do starve themselves and do make the weight, then they do not get all that extra time to rehydrate and put weight back on.

I want to see two legit lightweights fight each other...not two welters fighting at lightweight.
Spyder
They would still cut to make weight...

Same day weigh-ins would be brutal for the sport. We would be stuck with depleted fighters fighting at less than their optimal ability.

Give up that thought.
Imperius3
You think so? I would think they would stop cutting to make weight if they had to fight depleted.

I like Nate....but damn...the guy could fuck up a wet dream...talk about your own worst enemy....
Douchebag
"The Galaxy Warrior" comes up short once again. I swear, the guy never catches a break. If you think that it's a coincidence you probably come up short a lot of the time also.

They need to do more than that. I've been saying for years guys need to fight at their natural weight...period. There should be zero starving yourself down to this and that...

BUT....on this particular situation....at 36....I can 100% see his excuse as the truth....anybody over 30 on this board should be able to understand that as being a VERY possible legit excuse.

Man.....when I was young, I used to hear people say how harder things get after 30....I would laugh and think....they were just not working hard enough....flash forward to me today at 33....and they were speaking nothing but the truth.

I could easily see it catching you off guard at 36.
Big Slim Sweet
Nate didn't talk shit about Guzman not making the weight. What he didn't like was Guzman refusing to go through with the fight still at the over weight. What he didn't like was showing up for work that Saturday and learning his 300,000 payday was gone.
