Full Version: Biggest instances of "Heart" by a fighter?

Just wondering...what are some of your example of fighters who just dug down deep and overcame injury or whatever to keep fighting?

The two that come to mind are.

1. Arthur Abraham vs. Edison Miranda. Abraham had his fucking jaw broken, blood pouring out of his mouth, and still went forward getting a win against Miranda.

2. Tommy Morrison vs. Joe Hipp. Hipp wasn't a "world beater" by any stretch, but that fight was crazy considering what happened to Tommy and Joe in the fight.

Tommy broke his hand when it landed on Joe's hip, and also his jaw was broken. Joe's cheekbone got broken and was willing to go on even though the ref stopped. it.

I am sure there are many examples but the 2 examples that jump to mind from big fights:

Buster Douglas picking himself up after Tyson knocked him down and continued to beat that ass. He could of just folded like all the other fighters had after Tyson touched them. I guess his mothers death gave him something extra.

Corrales against Castillo. I thought it was over. Didnt you?
STEVENSKI
Roy trying to get up when Johnson gave him a love tap.
Warlord
Vargas after getting PLANTED by Tito twice in the opening moments of their fight, and then after getting upper-cutted in the nuts multiple times. To come back, put Tito on the deck, and make a fight of it, is a pretty big display of heart. Especially considering the years off his life and his career that Vargas gave away to do it.

Obviously Corrales/Castillio goes without saying.

Not boxing, but still fighting, would be Sakuraba vs. Smirnovas. Sakuraba died in that fight. Fucking died. Standing at the gates of hell to reclaim his soul, breathing life into his mangled body, and coming back to win. Tragic, beautiful, poetic violence.

As great as the trilogy was, that round personifies what we all love about the sport.

Holyfield vs. Bowe III

Nothing was on the line and Bowe was down for the first time in his career. He could have folded but got up and stopped Holyfield in a very impressive fashion! Tell me that aint heart!

Holyfield alone with his Warrior Spirit!

Say what you want but Wlad showed heart coming off the canvas as many times as he did against Samuel Peter and winning that fight.

I like Marquez coming from three knockdowns to put up one hell of a fight with Manny!

What about Roy manging one crunch after getting dropped by Johnson? Was that not impressive?

Meldrick Taylor took one of the worst beatings i've ever seen in boxing agianst Chavez and never gave up.

And ofcourse Corrales/Castillo who arguably fought in the most brutal fight ever.
Box in Hand
The Gatti Ward Trilogy will probably never be matched since fighters just aren't cut the same anymore (Too worried about money). And Corrales picking himself off of the floor was like Nat King Cole said "Unforgettable". The sad thing is, that you can't teach heart. That is definately something you're born with which is why no matter what De La Hoya says Ortiz will still be heartless. Yes, he did get up from a knockdown but that doesn't take heart, it takes will power. Heart is the ability to fight on with the odds against you. It's the ability to block out the crowd, throw caution to the wind, and fight like it's your last day on Earth. Ortiz was too busy thinking about having physical problems at the tender age of 22. At 22, you can fall off a three story building, drink a bottle of tequila, sleep with five porn stars, and still be in great shape the next morning. I'd give my left nut to be 22 again.

What you mean, 'died'?

You mean he actually died in the fight? Did he come back to life? he died for a sec?

i always thought sugar ray leonard becoming a slugger looking for that knockout he needed vs. tommy hearns first fight showed a hellava lot of heart... he was getting busted up and most any other figther would have given in.. ray sucked it up and went got it...

I really hate Ray Leonard & am a huge fan of hearns but that was a damm gutsy performance considering how Hearns was puttin it on him.

Azumah Nelson getting up from the knockdown in the 15th round of the Sanchez fight.

Danny Williams fighting with only one arm in the socket and the other dangling at his side then KOing the guy with the one arm..

Holyfield in the first Bowe fight..To finish that fight on your feet says a lot..Also the first Qawi fight that went 15 rounds..Holy lost 15 lbs during that fight..

V. Klitchko in the Lennox Lewis fight..

Ward/Gatti was brought up but Ward/Augustus wasn't..

Jess Willard getting out of round one even though he had all those crazy injuries that Dempsey gave him in those 180 seconds..

I think Malignaggi deserves credit here for his fight with Cotto..His cheekbone was so messed up..

George Foreman taking a massive beating from Holyfield and not going down..Also taking a beating from M. Moorer before KOing him..

Archie Moore and Durelle in their first fight..One of the best battles I've ever seen..Archie was over 40 in that fight too which just makes it crazier..

Fuck yeah. Dempsey put the hurt on Willard, the kind of hurt most men would wilt under both physically and mentally. In the end, Willard did wilt, but only in the former sense, not the latter.

Evander went after george with some hard stuff in that fight. That's one fight where evander wanted a Ko badly. Evander was 208 for that fight. George 250

Actually Foreman was closer to 260 lbs. I think.Still,it was a huge weight advantage for George..Basically 50 lbs. on Holy..Holy hit Foreman with one of the craziest combos in that fight..I think he hit him like 17-20 times in a row..

Yet he could not put Big George down. Holyfield was no puncher he was a palooka, a sheep in wolfs clothing & Moorer exposed him for what he was.

See Tyson took out a younger fitter man in Holmes the way a champion should do by beating him down & knocking him out. Holyfield could not manage that with a old ass Foreman who trained on cheeseburgers.

Jon stop talking up Holyfield he was the luckiest fighter on the planet & anyone who knows boxing knows that.

I'm sure Moorer exposed him while his ass was laying on the ground and got a massive beating in the second fight..I said it before and hate sayin this shit, but Holy's left arm was fucked up in the first Moorer fight..Foreman was a hell of a lot more dangerous than Holmes was in his comeback..Holmes only had a jab to rely on..Foreman had power and the ability to take huge beatings..Foreman would have beaten Holmes in his comeback if they fought..Archie Moore made him a smarter fighter..Moorer put a big beating on him and he ended up getting KO'd..Holyfield is no palooka..Stop playin!!
