Well for me its a hobby. I only started to learn a couple of years ago. I've sparred and all that and have had some experiences. I try the best I can to work out at least 3-4 times a week but sometimes with work and school it gets really hard.

I've been changing a lot of things..Like I said before,I changed my whole style almost a year ago..My footwork is really really good..I can't believe how much balance I didn't have before compared to now..I watch and study a lot of Joe Louis and Ray Robinson's feet to help me see what I'll end up like after continuing to improve them..If you're curious, watch how their feet never come off the ground when they move while in range..They pick their heels up and slide off the instep and ball of their foot..That's how they were able to throw punches while moving in any direction and throwing while on the move..

I've been hitting a lot harder through my technique with my straight right and overhand right and left hook..I should start sparring again in 6 weeks and have a fight 6 weeks after that to get me ready for the gloves..My jab has also come a long way and is harder to see since I don't give guys a visual of my shoulder and don't pick my elbow out..

A lot has changed and a lot still needs to improve..To get fully relaxed with your punches can take a really long time after thinking about it..When fully relaxed, you should be able to throw like 500 jabs without feeling it in your shoulder and not feeling tired..When you are tense with your punches or try to kill the bag/mit with a punch, you don't throw nearly as hard..It's taken me awhile for my body to fully trust that even though my mind does..

What about you Big G??

I figured I could ask you both this question then.

What are some exercises or routines I can do to improve my footwork??...

I think my form and execution on punches has gotten alot better but the balance and smooth movement with the feet is not quite there yet. What do you guys recommend?

Well, let me know what kind of footwork you actually use and I'll let you know..As I said in my post,I slide on the ball of my feet and fight out of a semi-crouch to stay 100% balanced(exactly like Joe Louis and Robinson)..As ya already know a semi crouch is being slightly bent from the belly, not the knees..

Do you walk, bounce,or slide with your footwork??I slide..Through sliding, when I move my front or back foot,my other foot will slide right into place if I am sliding on the ball of my foot..It has taken me 8 months to get really good with my footwork since it IS the hardest footwork to learn..I used to work 10-12 rounds a day on it,then 8,and now I'm doing 6 rounds of pure footwork..Watch Ray Robinson or Joe Louis' feet strictly and you'll see the type of movement I do..

Fitz, how often are you training these days??I train 5 days a week these days for 3-4 hours in the gym,not including my roadwork and a few other things..What Fitz was talking about with the rope,I have seen others doing this..It helps show you keep the distance between your feet..I bet Fitz is a walker with his footwork..If you also walk, this is a good exercise to do..Like I said,it all depends on the type of footwork you use..If you bounce, the rope won't help much..If you slide, the rope isn't necessary because it's completely natural for your other foot to gauge proper distance without even thinking about it if you're on the ball(not balls) of your foot..

Also,Fitz is right about that you should work your footwork without punches at first..I don't throw any punches when working my footwork at the very beginning of my training..Once you get your feet the way they should be,you don't need to keep working on them since you should of gotten the hard work outta the way through thinking it to get muscle memory..

Good lucky Big G!!I remember you saying you were gaining weight..Make sure to use your footwork especially against a naturally bigger guy..I'm not saying run,but get angles..When is the fight??

I am trying to learn how to slide, just like you. I've seen Robinson do it. It feels like sometimes I can do it but my balance is NOWHERE NEAR what it needs to be to get the leverage on my punches. My feet can go all over the place at times! LOL...

I can imitate it, but the balance isn't there and it feels unnatural. When I first started I was just flat footed and when I would spar with quicker guys, they were always outmanuevering me. Thats when I decided I wanted to add a little something to my style.

Hey Johnny I lost my fight...1st loss..damn.. My opponent was real fast and strong and he was going for the KO in the first round. I didn't feel comfortable in the middle of the ring I dunno my feet felt heavy. So I rope-a-doped him lol. Funny thing is he didn't even land a single clean head shot after round one but he won on workrate. I landed the more clean punches I got him with some good check left hooks. But damn I only got myself to blame I took this fight on short notice and really didn't train or spar in preparation hence me fighting 20 pounds above my natural weight. But I had fun in there I was nervous in round 1 but after that I was fighting a good fight with my back against the ropes.

Don't sweat it man..As Holyfield said,a setback is only an opportunity for a comeback..Just get back to your normal weight and things should get back to how they were..20 lbs is a lot of extra weight and is probably why your feet felt so heavy since they aren't used to that much more weight in an actual fight..I really hate amateur scoring systems..Sometimes it's all about the clean punches, sometimes its workrate, and so on..Its so inconsistant..I wouldn't worry about a loss 20 lbs over what you fight at..Just a good learning experience..

Johnny what happened was when I was I tried to box him from the outside but I just got the sense right away that I couldnt hurt him and my shots had no inpact and he was picking them all off and I really couldnt move properly I'm an in and out type fighter and I couldn't get out of trouble at all so I let him back me up against the ropes I felt like I was Toney and he was Jirov lol. Anyway, I know I'll learn from this loss bro I came out of the fight really disappointed because of my prepartion and performance I know I could've done better if I trained harder and lost some weight.

This is why you shouldn't come to the ring listening to nas sad.gif ........If you would have walked out to Killa Cam the GOAT you could have stopped him in round 1. All jokes aside don't let it get to you even Floyd had some losses in the amateurs just come back stronger/faster/better.

Ugh the thing is I just lost cuz I was out of shape and didn't train for this fight at all. Everyone told me I showed more skills but I just got outworked.
JonnyBlaze
Just had my first spar back in 9 months and did really good..I weigh 205 and sparred a dude 220..I was landing a lot of jabs and put him down in the second round with a overhand right when he was throwing a left hook at me..Dude fell forward and landed on his face with both arms spread all the way out..hahaha..We were goin light though but it was perfectly landed and I saw the punch right when I threw it(the openeing for it)..I also stunned him in the first round pretty bad with a left uppercut and later with a right cross..

I was really technique and nothing was wild..I was surprised at how relaxed I was after the long layoff from sparring..He hit me with maybe 4 right hands and a few jabs but not much..I actually didn't even feel like I sparred afterwards besides my ear..He threw a wide right hand right on my ear and it didn't hurt but it felt like the feeling you get when your ear is cold then someone flicks or hits your ear..

Yeah he does. Always on balance and gets perfect leverage when he punches.

Of course B-Hop really comes to mind. He's really good with the turns and pivots.

Thats whats up. I just lost 12 pounds in 2.5 weeks. My trainer felt I should trim down and become a bit more lean so I went from 187 to a comfortable 175. I think I may drop about 5-10 more. Eh...wont hurt.

Good Luck with your upcoming fight though.

It's all good,I know man..I know you wouldn't laugh about my hand bein messed up..It's gay typing with one hand but my other hand is starting to come around a bit..I still have the splint like I said but my other fingers are moving pretty good again..Today we really pushed things in therapy which is good since I really want to work out again..I've done some walking and some running which is fun but I really want to be able to do some upperbody stuff and not make myself lopsided by only working one arm..
