You thinking what I'm thinking? 'Cause I'm thinking, unless he gets matched up right, Toney is going to get humbled by RNC his first fight out. And I do NOT want to see that happen. I'm a huge fight fan, first and foremost, and Toney is onle of my all-time faves. It won't be a good look for him.
JD
What the hell is James Toney going to do in there?

White is using Toney to mock boxing while making a few bucks...and it's going to work.
Spyder
It's on now...no matter what happens, James should get mad props for putting his ass where his mouth is. Good for him for even trying something like this at 41...

Yeah...but that point is going to get overshadowed by him getting his ass handed to him. I did not want to see Lights Out go out like this.

Who cares?

I'm happy for him that he's getting the opportunity to challenge himself at this point in his career. At 41, most athletes are just wasting time in between doctor appointments...James on the other hand, is attempting to compete at a different sport. Good for him, I hope he does well.

James Toney fans care goddangit!

Nah but I see what you're saying. I just see very LOW chances of him succeeding at this endeavor, especially at 41 now that you mention it. Plus, a bad JT loss, ESPECIALLY after all the shit he talks, will just make boxing look bad in the whole "Boxing vs MMA" debate.
Romulus9
I'll keep it simple.

This is an embarrassment for all parties involved, especially Dana White.

Toney will be on his feet all of 30 seconds in his first fight before being taken down. Safe bet? Dana puts him in with a grappler for the first fight (someone like Jake "The Irish Blanket" O'Brien). Submission, decision, whatever. This isn't going to go well.

This wouldn't have gone well when James was at 160 or 168. Now, it's just going to be awful and I, for one, refuse to watch it. If by some miracle he does well, I'll catch it on a replay and eat a hearty helping of crow.
Spyder
How will boxing look bad? James is fighting in the octagon right?

For all I know, Mark Hunt is the only MMA heavyweight to try his luck at boxing...unsuccessfully. KJ Noons didn't make MMA look bad when he lost to a nobody last September in a boxing match.

There really is NO COMPARISON with sport versus sport...all we can do is be happy that James gets to try to accomplish the elusive crossover. It's not everyday that a boxer as likable and GREAT as James Toney puts it all on the line for a challenge like this. I truly hope that he succeeds. But either way, at least MMA fans will get to know and appreciate one of boxing's colorful gems...Lights Out.

I think you'll get a TON of MMA fans saying "See! A hall of fame boxer can't last in the octagon! MMA RULES!" Even though you're right in that it's a stupid conclusion to draw, people will draw it nonetheless.

That's really what I meant by it. Not to say that this is some epic battle of "boxing vs MMA" but casual fans will make it out to be one, and in their minds, it'll give them justification to say MMA>Boxing, which I think will make boxing be the brunt of many stupid conclusions.

But looking at it the way you do, I can see why you'd see this as a positive thing for JT. I guess I would sorta agree, but not so much only because there's such a low chance in him being successful.

History won't remember them, but it will definitely remember that James Toney tried his luck in the Octagon. Boxing Greats HAVE done worse...Muhammed Ali fought a professional wrestler. Joe Louis was a greeter at a fucking CASINO!

Well boxing deserves it. Excluding the megafights that rarely materialise & usually fall through boxing has pretty much lost me as a fan. At least in the UFC you get stacked PPV cards & the fights are well matched.

Never thought I would say that either.

I'm pretty sure whoever James faces he'll talk enough shit during the fight build up to get the guy to become confident in his stand up and try to box with Toney, get caught (Tim Sylvia style) and Toney will continue to talk shit.

The only fighter man enough to stand with Toney would be Wanderlei Silva, and they'll be in different weight classes. Anderson Silva might do it, but it'd be out of stupidity and he'd take it to the ground once he got caught.

The rest will take him down regardless. There won't be anything more embarrassing for Toney than to get the life choked out of him, and put to sleep quivering in the middle of the octagon.

It's gonna be a sad fucking day for me when it happens. I'm an MMA fan, and I'm a boxing fan too, and I LOVE James Toney. Gonna be heartbreaking to see him get humbled.
AussieLad
I guess it really depends on how generous Dana is feeling

The UFC doesnt normally give fighters with big names an easy first fight. They usually get thrown to the wolves.

It would be foolish for Dana to give James a gift opponent.

There are a plenty of guys that will happily bang with Toney in a stand up contest. James will still lose, simply because of the knees and kicks. He doesnt have the power of mercer to end it quickly, so even if he does well in the stand up, in will only be a matter of time till he gets taken down

I'll reserve judgement till i see who he is fighting
The Ollie Reed Fan Club
I'll agree that this is sad. I can't think of anyone in boxing right now that breathes, bleeds and pisses the sport the way James Toney does. To me he is a boxer 100%. I mean who the fuck in this modern day version of the sport has 80 fucking pro fights??

I guess he's going to UFC coz he can't get a half decent fight in boxing. I'd like to see him in with Tarver, either Klit, Haye or Hopkins. He probably doesn't win many of those fights but I wouldn't mind seeing them.

I can't believe he can't make a fight with any of the above mentioned dudes.

I just hope he doesn't get too damaged in the UFC. I sense this not going to end well for James, but then it doesn't end well for 99% of the guys I like in boxing LOL.

That sucks to hear you're sick of boxing..It is goin through rough times now and I agree,it's hard to get excited about some fights these days..Even Shane and Mayweather..Pac-man/Clottey just doesn't excite me..It should of been Pac-man/Mayweather..Ever since the fight was called off,I haven't given a shit who either fought..The super middleweight tourney is what does excite me though..Hopefully more weight classes get somethin like this goin..Cruiserweight or lightweight would be good divisions for a tourny..Robert Guerrero fights get me pumped me too, that dude is gonna be huge in my opinion..He is strong mentally(being able to continue fighting while his wife is extremely sick) and physically strong..Hes def. in my top 5 favorites these days..

Also,3King3, Toney would drop Slice real quick if they ever fought..When Slice got KO'd it was by a pathetic punch,Toney's counter right hand off a right hand would have Slice standing on his head..Remember,Toney will also be wearing 4 oz. gloves..

I agree Toney will be in trouble in the Octagon. Geez his balance in the boxing ring is not even close to what it once was, I cannot imagine what will happen in the Octagon. Toney will get taken down real quick and gas out, or a few kicks in the legs could do it. Man this could/will be embarrassing when the time comes.

Oh how I wish they threw him in there with the natural so he could taste some of that dirty boxing. I think the most entertaining part of Toney's fight is going to be the build up and the post press conference. I want to hear his excuse for getting KTFO

Stevenski, dont get too down on Fraud vs Shane, I bet you cant think of a better chance at Fraud gettin hurt over the last five years than the one coming up in May. Youv been there to help me channel my hate since I joined this board, I cant stand to see you not focusing your hate like a laser beam on the holy grail of Floyd being badly hurt! BELIEVE!!!

On this UFC subject, im with you, I dont like Toney, although maybe I would have if I was paying attention when he was a top tier, fit healthy athlete. I was too young then. All I see now is a fat loudmouth who feels he should be getting multi million dollar title fights when he cant even commit to stayin off the pies for a few weeks. I say let lets have a battle of the old team, Toney vs Couture would be ok by me. Randy would pick him apart like a surgeon.

Just like Toney does to cheeseburgers, fries, kebabs, pies etc

They would. But Liddell wouldn't even stand with Wanderlei Silva for an entire 3 rounds. He bitched out and started going for takedowns, which he has NEVER done before. I imagine even Chuck wouldn't be dumb enough to keep it on his feet for long with Toney. If he did, he would get himself decapitated within 2 minutes of the first round.

But yes, the UFC crowd would probably eat it up out of the sheer spectacle-factor. And I imagine a few in the boxing crowd would too.

Seriously Lloyd then do yourself a favour and introduce yourself to YouTube. The guy was an animal at 160-168 pounds and a couple of fights at light heavy and cruiser were pretty damn good as well.

Although I don't like his training habits, James has earned his right to smack talk.
