Full Version: Thoughts on Tarver as an Announcer
FightHype Community > BOXING HYPE > Boxing
JD
When I first heard him, I did not care for him...though in truth, I was probably just carrying over the fact that I was not all that fond of him as a fighter.

But I have to say, he has consistently improved - and done so in a very short period of time. In fact, I think he is a damn good ringside guy...personally, I really like him.

Thoughts?
Method
Like him a lot.
D-MARV
Awesome... He knows the game well.
Michigan Assassin
He actually is killing it. Like you, I didn't care for him as a fighter but he really knows his shit.
enigma1969
He is outstanding.
HaydelHammer
He sucks and has no clue what he's talking about!

.......nah, he's actually pretty good. LOL

Tarver's the best boxer/announcer around. He doesn't let his ego get in the way of things and he seems to be more and more relaxed with every fight.

He's much better than Lewis, Jones, or Bobby Chez. I also thought Kevin Kelly was good, but there was something missing there.

I've got to say that I miss Foreman, not because he was good or insightful - because he wasn't, but because I miss the dark manic depressive moments where Lampley had to scramble to keep things friendly between George and Merchant.
Snoop
He's a great announcer IMO, and he's gotta be pretty damn good to overcome the reputation he's created for himself as a fighter.
Romulus9
Listen to Tarver.

Listen to Lennox Lewis.

Compare.

It's staggering.
KookedKrack
I like the SHOWTIME announce team as a whole, Tarver fits in well with them. The only person I like on the HBO side is Merchant because he pretty much says whatever he feels regardless of the cheer leading the other guys may be doing(which is probably why we see a lot less of him now).
Mean Mister Mustard
I think he's good and at this point the Showtime announcers are better than the HBO one although I don't care much for the new announcer they have everynow and then. I don't know his name but he's the one who yells a lot.

Lampley is still decent when he's not being biased but Lennox Lewis and Steward are bringing the boat down. I gave Lewis a chance but he has not improved over these last 4 years and Steward has gotten worse than when he first started about 10 years ago.
grapevine241
tarver is great.

lampley, merchant, kellerman, manny, bernstein, tarver, charles, farhood, tessitore, and atlas are all usually excellent. lennox is usually pretty good. bob papa is weak. gus johnson is awful.

wtf.gif Lennox Lewis is to boxing what Pele is to football. All the respect in the world for their abilities, but none for there comments. Unless Lennox has impoved dramatically since I last seen him, he would be in my top 3 most useless

How could you not like Gus Johnson? I personally enjoy listening to him call anything. He gets excited but it isn't about a particular team or boxer, just about the sport in general and what is happening (i.e. the opposite of Lampley). He sounds like an excited fan, which I like.

I did not like Tarver as a fighter at all (always thought he was a bit too fond of what he did in boxing) but he is a decent enough announcer (though I did like Roy Jones better).

Whether comparing or not, the HBO announcers as whole though are just plain awful. I don't like anybody they have at this point and really I can hardly stand to listen to them period. Lampley is painful, Manny gives analysis but it is never correct and is something that anybody can pick out, Lewis can barely put together sentences, and Max Kellerman belongs in a studio (if he even deserves a job) because he likes to hear himself speak and normally spouts off nonsense trying to show how much he knows but comes off like a jackass.
happygocampy
Tarver's announcing is great, he shows no bias and calls the fight exactly how it is, i hated him as a figher and would skip out on watching his fights most of the time.

I think both HBO and Showtime announcing as a whole are sucking extremely bad, Gus Johnson in paticular pisses me off, most fights he calls he focuses on what 1 fighter is doing well, the one HE wants to win, i think his excessive yelling is aimed at persuading Judges to convince them that his favorite is winning, even when they're not. He should be banned from commentating for Boxing.
Snoop
Both channels have their respective "good" and "bad" announcers. I just think HBO has more of the "bad" ones and Showtime has more of the "good" ones. Last Saturday's Super Six announcing team was probably the best of em all.

His "excitement" seems really insincere to me. It's like hearing your annoying friend that doesn't know shit about boxing pretending to be an expert about it.

I take it as a guy who is excited about what he is watching but maybe I'm just hoping to hear anybody other than Lampley or Steve Albert do "play-by-play".

I think Tarver does a nice job, though he should probably wipe his nose off better when they show him on camera. laugh.gif

That's what I mean. He starts hootin and hollerin at anything that happens. Kind of like most MMA announcers.

Lennox is pretty horrible, but it's a "funny" horrible, not an annoying one.

Haha, that is probably the best explanation on my feelings on Lewis. I even felt like that listening to him as a fighter. I found him horrible, but I actually enjoyed it and liked listening to him, and used to find him funny in some way. It was weird.

I think Tarver is a great commentator..He and Atlas do the best job..Tarver really is a nice guy and seen differently in the ring and after interviews..He is a entertainer in the ring..I've always like Tarver and have defended him on here before and still would..

Merchant has the best one liners of all the commentators...

“The thorough bred against a clamor, or rather the Porsche vs. the pickup truck.”

"He’s become the J.Lo of boxing!"- Larry Merchant speaking on Oscar De La Hoya’s loss to Shane Mosley, HBO, September 2003

Follow the wisdom of the great actor, James Cagney, you hit your mark, you look the other guy in the eye, and you tell the truth.

On Paulie's right hand: It's as brittle as uncooked spaghetti

Paulie floats like a butterfly and stings like a butterfly

"Chris Byrd has two punches - pitty and pat."

Larry Merchant during Hopkins/Tarver: "Wake me up when something happens."

Lampley: Do you like the Eagles or the Falcons, Roy?
Roy: Philidelphia has the experience edge, but Mike Vick is a Roy Jones in the game, you never know what he might pull off.
<pause>
Merchant: He might get knocked out, Roy.

Merchant is the most hated commentator ever I think but I think us true fans have got to appreciate him..Like you said King, his one liners are great shit!!hahaha..He cracks me up cause its so ridiculous..Where did you find these quotes..I need a link!!I remember him sayin that Barrera had "become the surgeon" in one of his fights(after refering to a knife that doctors use I think)..

Gus is over the top...and to make matters worse, when it comes to boxing he is over the top about stuff that is really mundane. Moreover, listening to him try to debate what he was seeing with Bernstein was maddening to me.

The most hilarious Johnson call ever...I mean...REALLY, Gus?

Gus is lucky he's not white.

LL has gotten better....though that's not to say he is spectacular.

Foreman was good....I miss the BS between Merchant and Foreman.....George was the only one that could sometimes put Larry on the spot and make him look foolish and get him all flustered.

BUT....I have to say....Tarver is VERY IMPRESSIVE, he should have no worry at all as to what he can do after he hangs them up for good!

I also really liked Joe Mesi as a commentator.....I know he is looking at getting into politics but if that fails, he really needs to get back into a commentator booth.
Big Slim Sweet
I think Tarver is an excellent commentator. Knows his stuff and shows no ego. I also think Al Bernstien is one of the best. Gus Johnson sucks and his announcing during the NCAA tournament makes me want to hurt people very badly.

LMAO I know exactly what you mean. I could never help crack a smile when Lewis said the words 'pugilist specialist' or when he would turn to the camera trying to look hard and say 'Lennox Lewis is on a mission.' There was just something so ridiculous about him.

He's an awful commentator but again, I don't mind him.

Well I've kinda been away from boxing for the last month or month and a half..I got a bad stomach infection and haven't been able to train since..It was hard to even go to the Golden Gloves knowing that I should/would of been in it..It wasn't up until a week ago I started watching like I used to..I bet this all sounds kinda retarded but it was really depressing for me..I was in top shape and ready to fight..A week before my fight,I got this stomach infection and it was hard for me to even walk..

I'm hoping to get back next Weds to the gym but my stomach is still not 100%..I'm wondering if it really is a stomach infection or something more serious..

He's not bad, but it's been said a million times before, why doesn't Tyson land a gig as commentator? Who has more knowledge?
