So i hear in an interview with Couture that lesnar is tentatively scheduled to fight carwin at ufc 106.

I think this will be lesnars toughest test to date. Lesnar is still bigger, and alot faster. But i think Carwins stand up is better, and he has much heavier hands. Either way, i dont see a blow out of carwin. I just hope he catches lesnar with a huge punch and lays the fucker out.

Where i see carwin struggling is lesnars speed, which should help him get the take down. It all depends on what carwin can do to either prevent this, or whether he is big enough himself to muscle out from under lesnars buk. Given they are of similar size, he has a better chance of this than any other heavy out there

Lesnar starts favourite, but carwin is very live especially if they stay standing up

The same puncher's chance Arlovski had?

Lesnar will intimidate and destroy Carwin....

Carwin won't be intimidated.

I've said it since day one. Brock's gonna get beat the second he faces a skilled striker who can keep it standing.

Brock doesn't like to get hit; Carwin can punch. The question is, can Carwin keep himself up long enough catch Brock?

We'll see.

Either way, I don't see this going past one.

AussieLad
I see lesnar standing and trading with carwin, basically because of carwins size and wrestling background. Lesnar will realise that he wont utterly dominate carwin on the ground like he could Mir and Herring, and so he will throw punches. When facing another skilled wrestler in couture, lesnar traded punches and was getting beaten until he grazed randy with the anvil he calls a fist. He never really tried to take couture down, and this is what i think will happen in this fight too

Carwin has proven that he can not only take a big shot, like the one that gonzaga landed, but that he can maintain composure and knock his opponent out while dazed. Lesnars chin hasnt really been tested because he either bulldozes dangerous strikers to the mat. The only time he has traded strikes was against randy who was so much smaller that he really had nothing to fear in the way of striking power.

I see them trading strikes, i see lesnar landing first, rushes the kill and gets clipped himself. How well he survives this will determine the fight. Lesnar has a melon for a head, i reckon he can take a shot
AussieLad
I was reading that carwin had his nose broken vs gonzaga, and in the process it deviated his septum. Dont know too much about the condition, but i always thought it was a congenital defect you were born with.
Mandirigma
Carwin can destroy Lesnar.. Lesnar does not have the one punch knock out power that carwin possess..
AussieLad
Exactly.

Carwin has serious power. And i mean serious violent one punch KO power

He dropped Gonzaga with an arm punch, no hip rotation, no momentum, just a straight arm punch delivered like a sledge hammer

Was reading in a MMA mag that back in his fake wrestling days, lesnar had an unofficial real wrestling match against kurt angle to determine who was actually better at wrestling. Kurt apparently repeatedly pinned the much larger lesnar (240 vs 300 pounds). Of course this was just wrestling, with no striking ivolved, but it goes to show that a smaller man can beat lesnar at his own game

Carwin doesnt have either angles pedigree, and nor does his wrestling stack up against lesnars (division 1 vs division 2 in favour of lesnar). But he is a big powerfull, skilled wrestler with dynamite punch power. I think he will perform better than couture, herring or mir
AussieLad
Just sat down and rewatched lesnar vs Mir.

I think this fight really highlights how limited lesnar is in terms of all round skills. His striking is fairly basic, and i think if the UFC had a really good evasive striker, someone who forced lesnar to chase him and picked his counter shots, and stuffing take downs (easier said than done) it would be failry easy to outpoint brock. A machida-esque fighter would have little problems beating lesnar.

Mir had some good striking exchanges, but made really obvious errors. Dont throw a knee at the wrestler, he is going to take you down and lay and pray. And when you strike with him, dont keep coming forward. Get in and get out. Coming forward is inviting the clinch. I wonder what they thought there gameplan should be from watching that series of fuck ups.

Also, despite being a very good wrestler, lesnars gameplan on the ground is very very basic. When he gets mir down, he is in half gueard and is content to stay there. He doesnt try and improve position at all, not once going for the mount. Sure, he didnt need to, as there was nothing mir could do to get out or fight back. But can lesnar afford that strategy against someone as big, and solid at wrestling as carwin. I think if he tries that, carwin should be able to force lesnar to scramble by bucking his way out. We may get to see if lesnar can indeed move from half guard to side control to mount if carwin forces him to. And if carwin can exploit lesnars weaknesses at striking enough to land one of his bombs, i just dont see anyone taking one of those shots and staying standing, not even a melon headed lesnar

Really looking forward to this fight

I don't think so....and I think he can do the same to Carwin....

I agree with the guys in the video below about Lesnar's ground work...that he uses his size and strength on the ground at an advanced level....enough to completely work over a 240 pound, BJJ Specialist...

What Lesnar did against Mir is probably 50 times more advanced than Roy Nelson's fat bully, schoolyard, pin and pat against Slice...who has as much ground game as a fish out of water I might add...lol

AussieLad
I'm not saying that what lesnar achieved in there wasnt impressive, or lacking in skill. Just that it wasnt varied, as he went straight for that same mount both rounds the first oppurtunity he got. It was obviously the centrepiece of his game plan to get that half gaurd, and it was highly effective. But as those guys pointed out, his technique was aided significantly by the size and strength advantage he had over Mir. I really dont think this will translate against carwin.

1) Carwin isnt going to be throwing kicks or knees. Putting yourself on one foot (or even worse no feet in the case of the jump knee) against that sort of bulk coming at you, well you better hope that strike lands and finishes the fight. Both take downs in the 2nd round were the direct result of mir launching knees and making himself vulnerable

2) Because carwin wont be throwing kicks or knees, he will be in a good stance to sprawl. Lets face it, he knows what lesnars bread and butter is, and will be looking for it. He's a solid wrestler, and i think he will stuff lesnars shoot attempts, possibly ending up on top himself. Thats not to say that lesnar wont take him down eventually, but i think that it will be much more likely as a result of lesnar driving carwin up against the fence, then dropping to scoop the knees out from under him.

Once lesnar realises that he cant shoot and take carwin down, he will be forced to trade punches, and look for oppurtunities to press carwin back against the cage. This should eliminate the bulk of brocks main weapon

Great video by the way. Highlights that there is alot of skill that goes into the ground game, even something as simplistic looking as what brock did to mir. Not just anyone could do that to someone as great on the ground as frank
The CEO
Carwin looks awkward and stiff to me, Aussie...the way he moves....vulnerable in the legs too (as is Lesnar to some degree)....but I think Lesnar's got muscles Carwin doesn't even know exist....and that Lesnar WILL take him down and "maul him with technique" like they said above...
AussieLad

LOL. What was the guy going to do about it... nothing
Mandirigma
Carwin also has this excellent wrestling background.. Lesnar will have a hard time taking him down.. I smell blood... this will be one of the bloodiest event in UFC...
Run and Gun Game Calls
Fight is only a couple of weeks out, so who ya got?
Warlord
Carwin as well, though I might have to re-think it now that Smarmy is picking him too.
lloyd mayflower
Went with Carwin. Not seen him really so its more a pick of who I want to win. Although I am sure sooner or later Brock will be found out with brutal consequences
Run and Gun Game Calls
I went with carwin as well. I think Brock is stronger, and a better wrestler, but Carwin is worlds above brock in the stand up game.

Remember how hard a time couture and ortiz had at taking chuck down once chuck liddell learned to defend a takedown? And lets be honest, Carwin is no slouch when it comes to wrestling. I think he is just well rounded enough to ko Fat head "aka" Lesner
Megadeth
Carwin by brutal KO. Lesnar chin hasnt been tested but I am sure that big meathead of his can take a punch. After seeing the way Carwin manhandled my boy MIR, he is just to brutal. I am tired of seeing lesnar lay on people and play donkey kong as heath herring put it.

Those quick uppercuts of Carwin are vicious, I just hope he knocks meathead out.
BigG
Carwin. Lesnar is a big sissy
Run and Gun Game Calls
saw carwin today on espn, man the dude looks ripped, he should be in shape for the fight
King Eugene
Haven't seen much of Carwin so I was watching the special aired on Spike TV today and decided to youtube him........Goodness Fuckin Gracious!!! Lesnar is an animal but Carwin is a beast. I'd really be surprised to see this one past the first round. Never knew Carwin was so big as well. This looks pretty evenly matched. Carwin is a very humble guy which I like and Lesnar is a straight cocky asshole which I dont dislike. I watch a lot of MMA but not as much as boxing but rather now attempt to make a pick on this one. I'll just be enjoying it this weekend.
AussieLad
Been saying carwin will beat Lesnar for a while now. And thats not going to change.

If you listen to brock speak, he's far from stupid. He's an extremely confident alpha male, and that comes across as cocky. I dont like him, but i dont hate him.

His wrestling is much better than most in the division, he has pedigree, however he isnt "that" good a wrestler. Look how well couture did with the wrestling, despite being the much smaller man. He was able to control brock in places, and escape from underneath him, something Mir was incapable of doing. Now Randy is a highly accomplished wrestler himself, so its not that surprising, but given brocks size and ammateur achievements i would have thought he wouldve done better.

Carwins wrestling will hold brock off, allowing his superior striking and the Thors Hammers he calls fists to seperate Brock from his senses. First round KO

The CEO
Regardless of his ailment and layoff, I still have Lesnar in this one...

I see Carwin getting overwhelmed by the moment AND the superior, overall Strength of his opponent...

No F'N way, brother! Carwin's got a great wrestling background and TNT in his fists. You guys can look up my post history. I've always pegged Carwin as a guy who could stop Lesnar, because I don't think Lesnar is capable of dealing with an elite striker. For better or worse, Carwin is that when talking about UFC heavyweights.

Lesnar absolutely HATES to get hit, and he does NOT react well to it. At all.

I think Aussielad laid it out perfectly. Carwin is going to stop Brock Lesnar. Will that make him the best heavyweight on the planet? No it will not. But it will make him the best the UFC has to offer.

I wonder how how Training with Couture for this fight will help lesner prepair? It has to help alot

There was a previous thread where we all spoke on this matchup...I'm gonna merge this with it...

I know Carwin throws bombs, but I believe Lesnar has a better chin than you think.....I see Carwin gettin' nervous, taken down, and subsequently mauled...professionally.
lloyd mayflower
All I know for sure is im going to be rooting hard for Shane. I want to see that big arse Lesnar get starched.

You know, I don't like that Lightweight title under my avatar. If Carwin wins, can I get that shit changed to GOD. That'd be cool. laugh.gif
