Full Version: Roy Jones to face Lebedev in Russia!

On the face of it to the casual fan this could be the kind of tune-up a shot Roy can take before looking for a big fight.

However Lebedev is no joke and just gave Marco Huck all he could handle (and Huck is no joke himself) to lose a disputed decision. It seems so sad to see Roy being the palooka who now gets made to travel halfway around the world just so he can be added to the guy's resume.

Roy is nothing more than a name opponent these.

Lebedev by brutal knockout (is there any other kind against Roy?) in 6 or less.

Last time i seen Lebedev he removed Enzo Maccarinelli from his senses, Roy could get seriously hurt off this guy.
salvador
Roy's obviously got a huge ego from everyone calling him the best for so long and so it makes sense that he wants to leave the sport in a blaze of glory and that this is all ego driven.

But at the same time, I can't help but think that maybe he needs money. Because if it was just about legacy, then he should be getting back in with Tarver win or lose to erase the horrific way he finished their third fight.

This is more sad than crazy. He could very well be on track for brain damage. That KO in Australia was scary/pitiful.

If this isn't money driven, then someone needs to wake him the hell up.
HaydelHammer
This fight won't go past the 1st round.

Pretty soon roy will be talking like he's got a mouthful of crackers (just like meldrick taylor was on that HBO legendary nights series)

D-MARV
This is sad.

Is Roy not making enough money doing the HBO broadcasts?

I don't find it funny. Reckon it's proper sad and yeah, he's an accident waiting to happen. Fair enough, he's got his fair share of haters but shit man, nobody surely wants to see Jones end up a cabbage?
lloyd mayflower
Would be interesting to speak to Roy and find out whats driving him. Is he skint? (Broke, in American tongue) Is he really delusional enough to think hes still in any sort of fighting shape. Are there people around him pleading with him to stop or is he surrounded by fools and yes men who dont see whats going to happen to him if he gets in with Lebedev?

Anyone know him or anyone close to him that can shed some light?

Just from the way Roy carries himself, he seems like the type that marches to the beat of his own drum. Basically if he wants to do something, he'll do it with or without you so you might as well roll with him if you've known him just for support.

He practically lives out in the middle of nowhere (pensacola) so unless he found a way to blow his money, I'd surely like to know how....there aint jack sh*t in pensacola or that entire gulf coast area but casino boats and Interstate 10......and I don't see him as the gambling type.

I wouldn't mind him explaining during an HBO telecast why he is continuing. He has never been fundamental sound at all, so being a vet in the game doesn't really work in his favor against younger guys since his style was so unorthodox and fed off his athleticism which he no longer has to sustain (or last) in the ring now.

I can't understand why Roy continues either, but if he did why not softer opposition? Or does he really need the money? I bet these guys bought Roy a first class air ticket, put him up in a nice hotel and threw a couple of Russian hookers at him, all the time thinking "this guy has no idea what he will be facing in the ring."

Meantime Roy's getting treated like a king and prolly thinking he's got a shot in the fight.

At this stage in his career and with the beatings he's taken lately Lebedev is the worst kind of fighter he should be facing.

Jones already has an ebonics style and type of jigaboo country grammar communication ... a few more beatings and he will be unintelligible for sure...

With the exception of Brett Farve, boxing is the only sport that I know where the fans actively call for someone's retirement.

I'm glad they don't do that at my job. That shit would suck.

maybe it'll knock some since into RJJ, i think he needs it. he needs to come to the realization that he's past his prime and his decline isn't a fluke. most fighters hang them up after being embarrassed, this cat is still going.

i don't want to see him paralyzed or anything but he needs to get knocked the hell out again.

We could literally see Rocky 4 before our eyes. Apollo Creed = Roy Jones....

At least Apollo got off some good dance moves before he went, haha. Lebedev may get a chance to expand his fanbase with his style provided he doesn't spark Roy in the first 30 seconds of the fight.

This thought crossed my mind yesterday actually.

I just don't see any way roy DOESN"T get ko'd by this guy. From all i'm reading the guy has heavy hands and good power = drooling Roy laying face first on the canvas

blackbelt2003
Personally I'd be impressed if Roy can get to the ring without the crowd's cheering KO'ing him on his ring walk.

This is such a bad fight for Roy.

Lebedev can punch, is aggressive...he can take a shot...and he has a nasty streak in there. Would HBO please give this guy a raise, or give him a talk show...Roy's story is going to end badly if he doesn't get out.

I concur. I"m one of his biggest fans, but damn.....this guy is going to end up like tommy hearns end career...getting pummeled by younger guys at higher weight classes. Only good thing is when roy gets hit he goes to sleep....he doesn't hang around too long after that monster shot.

Yup loving every minute of it.

Really? I found it most entertaining seeing Roy seperated from his senses yet again.

Nah I never would want to see a fighter suffer a permanant brain injury. I just like seeing flashy braggarts like Roy get the shit kicked out of them.

Xactly gravy.

QUOTE (ViperSniper @ Apr 6 2011, 08:58 PM) *
Lebedev (who is being trained by Kostya Tszyu for this bout) is a young fighter who is meant to hungry, very aggressive and very good power is seriously a horrible combination for an old, vulnerable & reluctant Roy Jones Jr.

This is even better if Lebedev carries power like Tszyu.

The positive of all of this is that RJJ's jaw is so shattered that it won't let him take too much punishment (as long as he is not held up by the ropes or the corner).

Good point.

It will be an upset if Roy makes it out of the first round.
JLUVBABY
damn... roy is in for a painful night.. he has to be getting tired of this... he is becoming the new mathew saad muhamed... damn shame... lol...

I wonder if Jones son's ever talk back to him knowing all they have to do is chin check him if he gets out of line with them?

also...I wouldn't mind seeing Roy vs Tavaris Cloud. Another brutal finish indeed

he probably whooped their asses enough in his prime to the point they wouldn't try it now. probably while yelling about Pensacola being in the house and talking to them in third person.

I was reading this thread and remembered how Ricky Hatton used to always say its a boxing match not a tea party, I reckon Roy Jones could probably suffer a KO at a tea party
