IBF bantamweight champion Joseph Agbeko (28-2, 22 KOs) and undefeated,
rising 118-pound star Abner Mares (21-0-1, 13 KOs) will conclude
SHOWTIME’s “Bantamweight Tournament Final: Winner Takes All” on
Saturday, August 13, at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas
beginning at 10 PM/ET.

I'm highly anticipating a genuine FOTY contender and believe the clash should evoke enough interest from the genuine fans of the sport to curtail the over saturation of Pac-May threads which have tended to spoil as well as dominate the board of late.

“My prediction is that the announcer will say "And STILL IBF
bantamweight champion of the world....” Agbeko stated. ““I love fighting
boxers over fighters because boxers use their brain. This will be a
good fight. I know that we have both fought Vic (Darchinyan) and Yonnhy
(Perez).  He survived that but he will not survive me.”

Mares said: “I expect nothing but tough fights at this point in my
career.  It helps me prepare better.  Against Vic (Darchinyan), I fought
a war. I'll do whatever I need to do. In December, I had to change my
plan because of the cut (on my head).  Depending on how the fight goes
over the first few rounds, I'll adjust. I plan to box more this time but
you never know.”

Mares' gritty and fantastic battle with Darchinyan underlined his toughness, his ability to adapt mid-fight and how he won't be fazed by whatever circumstance arises during a fight.  He is a resilient character but he will need every ounce of his talent if he is to overcome the heavy hitting Agbeko.  Joseph could be rusty, that's a definite possibility and will make his task all the more difficult if indeed that is the case.  However, that would be purely speculation and the lay off may not have affected him at all.

We have to assume Agbeko will be reminiscent of Perez II and if he is, Mares will struggle.  I'm expecting Agbeko to have worked tirelessly on exploiting Mares' flaws and to box on his toes whereby he can out-maneuver his foe but I'll counter that by asserting how by Mares, as I mentioned, can adapt and if his sometimes uneducated offense is nullified he will find a way of retrieving the situation.  This will be a close fight, an epic fight potentially, and one I am extremely excited about.  Abner Mares does not do bad fights.

My pick Mares MD.

Wish I could get excited about it, cos it should be very good, but since I know I wont get to see it, I cant.

I'll go with Agbeko.
SmartyBeardo
This is the next level test for Mares. He barely got by Darchinnychinchinyan. Some thought Vic got gamed by the ref in that one. Agbeko is one of my favorite mini-warriors. He always comes to fight but he also has the ability to adjust.

I think Mares will get a close and possibly disputed decision if it goes the distance. But first Abner must get there. Agbeko may be able to break Mares down and stop him late, not unlike Peterson's victory over Cayo last night.
JONdaCON817
Agbeko is a gangster. I think he pulls this one out.

Agbeko-SD

This can easily be FOTY.

Agbeko by SD in a war!

I like Mares and actually hope he wins. But I think that Agbeko might stand up to punches and the multiple knockdowns that could come from BOTH in this little brawl! The knockdowns may be the difference in the scoring. There could be many stuns, twists, and turns, in this fight, that has the potential to be a FOTY candidate! Even getting to the cards will be a war in itself for this match. This comes down to endurance, boxing skills, brawling, power, everything. Very hard to call, and not a recommended fight on which to bet.

Jacc, why you tryin to be like me??....lol

Both guys can adapt and are very good at either boxing or brawling. Agbeko has done better against common opponents but Mares is coming into his own and may be a better fighter come fight time.

Agbeko has fought off long layoffs before and they didn't seem to affect him.

One thing Mares would be well advised to do is to work the body. He did it beautifully against Darchy, but against Agbeko it might be easier said than done. I expect a good world class contest.
ViperSniper
By no means should it be easy, but I got this feeling that Mares will beat the always tough n tricky Agbeko quite clearly. This will come down to who is more ready and with Joseph's injury he suffered, Agbeko may not look at his best and Mares will be the waiting patiently ready! With his close debatable fight against Vic, Abner Mares has already got a nice chunk of experience with that bout (along with the rest of the tournaments) and should have him walking into this bout ready as can be. Mares is a big, strong Bantamweight who has shown to have solid skills which should be enough to carry him through this fight and fingers crossed, sets up a mega bout against Donaire!

Mares by wide decision.
kidbazooka1
Can't wiate for this one.

Mares is the more skilled fighter but Agbeko is relentless in his attack and has an iron chin.

This is a pick em but regardless of who wins it should be a good.
SmartyBeardo
The closer this gets the more my anticipation grows. I think Agbeko has the toughness and wisdom to take this unless Mares has grown considerably since the Darchinnychinchinyan fight.

Of course, we will not know until the fight how Agbeko's collapse will effect his performance.

Nah, you live in hope there. Personally I can't wait til the day that the pair of them have retired. Sick to fuckin' death of both of the cunts.

Anyway, Mares is my pick for this but it's gonna be a bloody hard fight and I'm gutted that I won't see it until it's all done and dusted. Definitely have to avoid the result for this one cos I reckon it'll be a great scrap.
BoxingWizard23
Just finished up my schooling on Mares/Agbeko.

I see this being a very close fight. Both can brawl and box interesting enough but I see Mares pulling this through since he showed his heart and durability in his last fight against the Raging Bull.

I would never ever bet on a fight like this. It can go either way but I pick Mares by SD.

I didn't order the fight but my friend did so I'm gonna watch it over his house I expect a very good fight.

Mares vs Donaire 2012....hopefully
caneman
I got Mares in this one 116-112! Good fight though with close rounds!

Come on guys, lets have your thoughts and predictions for this potential fight of the year. This is a classic match and I am a lil surprised at what seems to be a lack of interest in the fight on here.
Mean Mister Mustard
I like Mares's bodywork to give Agbeko trouble, but I don't know if it will be enough to beat Darchy.
BigG
Its gonna be a close fight with Agbeko maybe leading after 8 but I think Mares will work him the final rounds for a close but clear win.....

Good point about the bodywork. Mares down the middle right hand is also beautiful. I think the key is Agbeko's strength. Is he ready for an onslaught like this after his collapse?

Mares will get the decision but I still think Agbeko may TKO the Mexican late.

BTW, what does "Darchy" have to do with this?

No idea since @ this point I think chiny would lose to both and did to one already!!! no?
caneman
My bad, he lost to both guys!

Because Darchy appealed the refereeing in that fight vs Mares. A rematch was ordered after the fight vs Agbeko.
Jack 1000
Could the ref go the other way this time? Maybe even penalizing Mares for shots right on the belt? He is gonna be watching that like a hawk. Agbeko could win because of point deductions and that could set up #3.

If all things are equal, I would actually pick Mares by SD, but I am going with Agbeko where point deductions will come into play in a fight that Mares could have won had they not been taken away. How about that?

Im giving this one to Agbeko this time around. I dont think the ref will feel any pressure, if anything, he will make sure he plays it directly by the book instead depending solely on his judgement (based on the calls in the first bout).

I think Agbeko will do better this time and fix all of his fuck-ups from the first fight, because I cant even recall what took Agbeko so long to assert himself the first time. So this will be a fight! I picked Agbeko by close decision because Mares IS the champ, so if he doesn't knock him out, then the cards will more than likely be close.
streetlion1
Im going for Agbeko by decision in this one....I like the way he came on strong the last half of their first fight and also I think Mares has a real Golota-like problem with low blows.
Jack 1000
Who is the ref for this? Could not find out when I checked last night.

Good question...hope it aint a blind ref cool.gif
