Full Version: What About Saul Alvarez vs Margarito, Mayorga, or Clottey at 154?

This is a match that crossed my mind recently. As of now, Canelo is still being brought up slowly, which is a good idea for his career. Im was thinking of this fight because months ago, Mosley mentioned a possible rematch with Cotto and/or Margarito in the future.

So, if Canelo gets past Mosley, does anybody see him in a fight with Margarito? How beneficial would it be? How does he fair? Im sure Margs wont mind getting another paycheck at this point of his career...

Thoughts?

EDIT: I just added Mayorga and Clottey to the title. Thanks in advance Slump, great idea with the additional opponents listed in your post. You're the man! ok.gif

I would just love to see Alvarez beat Magarito to a pulp. I'd also like to see Ortiz fight Magarito.
mgrover
easy win for Alvarez mainly because Margs eye is a cause for concern, I mean it was obvious in the Cotto rematch that it wasn't up to strength and I doubt it ever will be.

I'd rather see Mayorga get a shot at Canelo actually. I rewatched his fight with Cotto last night. That dude just makes for an entertaining fight, plus I think it'd be interesting to see how Alvarez dealt with Mayorga's antics pre and during the fight. Also, although he does fade in the championship rounds, Mayorga is still a very dangerous fighter, some of the body shots he got in on Cotto were impressive. I dunno man, guess I'd just rather see the crazy nicaraguan and Don King get paid over Plasterito and Slob Arum again...

Assuming Mayorga's still fighting that is, is he?
What's Clottey doing at the moment? Dude must've spent up that Manny cheque by now... Or is he still trapped on Arum island with Gamboa?

not interested in seeing margarito make another pay day. stick a fork in him...he's done.

Alvarez vs. Margarito would obviously be a huge PPV, especially in Mexico, but I'm not interested. I like the suggestion of Alvarez vs. Clottey the most. That would be a solid test for Canelo. Clottey vs. Cotto was a great moment for Joshua (even though Cotto was at the shit weight of 147) until he remembered the Bobfather's commandments and the rest is history..
Mayorga could be interesting too, but I think that would be much less of a challenge than Joshua "the Grand Master of doing the Bobfather's bidding" Clottey.

Re. Clottey, he fought a few months ago against a complete bum and got a 2nd round TKO.

I actually said this to a friend years ago. It would probably be the most interesting press conference ever. It should be billed Battle of the Bad Asses lol

Professor made a point about not wanting to see Margarito get another payday, but people forget him getting paid, when the idea of him getting his ass kicked again crosses their mind. laugh.gif

With that theory in play, it's a win-win or Margarito. He doesn't care about getting his ass kicked, as long as he's in a grueling fight. On top of that, he still gets paid to take that punishment.

Man, I'm not interested in seeing Clottey fight ANYONE. Why? Dude won't throw punches during shadowboxing.

It's hard to throw punches against a guy who "mysteriously" cant stop himself from throwing over 1k power punches over a course of 12 rounds without getting tired.

That's right...Cotto did throw over a 1K punches when Clottey "mysteriously" tanked the last 2 rounds, as well. My fault.

I was speaking of another character who suddenly doesn't speak English when asked about testing....

As far as Cotto vs Clottey...a body slam in NY in the moth of June, will always be overlooked! laugh.gif

That Bam Bam Bigelow slam by Cotto was TOTALLY overlooked by the ref. He needed a booster, and that happened to be his golden ticket.

He threw punches at Cotto and Margarito...

Can't just write the dude off for "doing the Bobfather's bidding" that one time... He thought it was gonna lead to better things, unfortunately it just led to him appearing on the untelevised portion of an undercard...

Still, Canelo vs either Joshua or Mayorga is fine by me. Margarito should go rematch Shane or something, lol!

There was also an interview in which he said that Arum was trying to coerce him. Not to necessarily throw the fight but not make Manny look bad at all. It was on Youtube. I'll see if I can find it.

Yeah I saw that interview, was on Ghanian tv I think. Soon as I saw that, it just confirmed my suspicions. Bobfather must've seen it too; ever since, Joshua been on milk carton status...
I really do feel like Clottey was just ordered to not win that fight. Dude threw like 2 and a half punches and messed up Manny's face. So it's like he decided, "well if I'm losing, I ain't getting sparked". People go on about how he never threw punches, but whenever he did it seemed to stun Manny (remember those right uppercuts on the inside?) and also marked him up. Now if ur under orders to lose, an everytime u land a punch its doing damage, you might just drastically lower your output too. Just another way of looking at it, as opposed to the standard, "Clottey felt the power and shelled up" viewpoint...

Man I don't wanna see him against any of these guys with the exception of mayorga. He just makes shit happen he looked good against cotto after a layoff and he WILL get under Canelos skin.

Put him in there with some fresh faces. Some danger, kirkland, molina, dare I say ortiz? But honestly I think ortiz would make it nasty on Canelo. Possibly ko him

Anyway if cotto loses to mayweather I could see him fighting Canelo after too
Thickback
He'd beat the shit outta Marg and I'd love every minute of it. Mayorga would get TKO'd again after landing some shots of his own. Clottey vs Alverez is a toss up. He wont be able to bully Clottey and if Joshua was aggressive, Canelo would have serious problems but would keep his belt via gift decision. Also, fight will never happen any way....TR vs GB....shit is depressing at times....

Sure I can. He threw them at Margs & Cotto, but didn't when he really needed to nor counted, now did he? Okay, he hurt his hands or shoulder against Margs and his being "injured" against Cotto due to (as Shely calls it) the "Bam Bam Bigelow" slam. I mean, it's always something, right? That's the story of Clottey's boxing career. His most meaningful wins have come against a bloated, (let's be honest) "shop worn" Diego Corrales and Zab Judah. Who has he beaten? Every compliment given to Clottey is of "potential" or "almost" status. Now, let me be clear, this isn't to say he is garbage; on the contrary, far from it. This me saying, I don't care to see him in any meaningful fight, should he really come to fight, he COULD possibly win. I say that b/c history has shown us, he won't and we'll be able to point to something ELSE that we hopefuls can say, "the reason he lost that fight was......" He reminds me of the welter/jr. middleweight version of Allan Green. Long on potential and opportunities, short on results.
