Really? Until I see him in with somebody who has skills and where his blow up doll weight isn't a factor, then I can't heap too much praise on him. Even if he beat Martinez, if he comes in 180 as usual on fight night, I just can't respect the W

i thought his last few fights have proven the kid is a legit fighter. if he beats martinez....i can't do anything but give him props. some guys can lose more than others...he's fighting at a weight that he can make...until they go back to same day weigh ins....this is alway going to be the case.

If they went back to same day weigh ins he would be as dry as a raisin. He complains about leg cramps now imagine if he was drained because of a same day weigh in? Lol he wouldnt be able to stand
daprofessor
if chavez beats martinez convincingly...ppl will be screaming for it. arum will do his best to make sure it doesn't happen. chavez himself knows he wouldn't have a chance against ward. it would be a good name for ward to add to his resume....and at least both would get paid proper. this fight is a year or two away from being made. ward has waaaay too much depth for chavez. he'll drown him if it happens....i'm thinking ward by stoppage.

the bigger fight to see imo... golovkin/ward.

true, but I doubt they go back to same day weigh-in's which is unfortunate.

Regardless of what he does in his career, I'd never pick him to top Ward. I witnessed greatness on Saturday night. The difference between the 2 fighters is Ward is the truth, Chavez jr is just a mystery
mrchitown
I think they will fight sooner or later but when ever they square off in the ring, Ward will dominate him. There's good, great, and then there's elite. And Ward is the definition of elite

But the sad part is chavez will probably blow more money then ward will ever make

knowing arum a ward/chavez fight probably won't happen till 2015.

that fight would be huge and it will help their resume/legacy.

imo, that fight should happen next year maybe in the fall.

i doubt chavez will be with arum for much longer, so the fight can happen, and if somehow he beats martinez in an impressive fashion I still think he'd get his ass handed to him by Ward, especially now he won't have Arum protecting any of his bullshit weight moves and forgetting the drugs test

That is the sad truth. I heard that Ward made $1.6 mil for the fight this past Saturday. I wonder what Chavez jr is getting to fight Martinez this weekend

He's staring $3M in the face, and Sergio is getting about $1.4M.

Hell yeah!...if they sell about 2M+ PPVs laugh.gif

I'm not sure how many buys they'll do though...maybe about 300-400k. If it does 500k or more, then things will look for Julio in his next few PPVs...not so sure about Sergio's PPV drawing power though.

i noticed a lot of ppl complaining about it on fb. thing is...they don't understand how this works i guess. if martinez beats chavez...i don't see his paydays getting much bigger. outside of a fight with floyd...there really isn't any other big money fights for him. he'll have to move up in weight to get that.

I agree, and I pay little to no attention to people on FB. They truly dont understand how it works. As you said, even is Sergio beats him, his purses wont go up significantly.

Reminds me of Shane Mosley after beating Oscar twice...his purses didn't "skyrocket" and neither did his fame. Floyd and Manny's did, but that goes to show you hpow big of a part, management and promotion plays...whether someone does it for you, or if you have the gift of gab.

Even if he moves up in weight, a Ward fight may suit his pockets, but hell, he will definitely get the short end of the stick against an accomplished Super 6 winner in Ward. Unless those guys at 168 make a name for themselves, he'll be in the same boat as Ward, of course he wont have a paddle though. Lol

the thing about sergio is that he rose to the top the old fashioned way....he blazed a serious trail. he should be a huge star. but he's not. i blame his promoter. how do u have a guy with all that talent...who is winning impressively...and is taking on all comers and not make him into a star? he has a 'the look.' i don't think the language barrier has anything to do with it. i think it's because he has a promoter who is stuck on the eastcoast...and he thinks small. martinez lives in the largest latin american market in the country. why isn't he on all the spanish speaking stations? why isn't he endorsing products? why isn't he fighting at places like the staples center? it's an easy sell imo....but his ppl are failing him. i've been at events where his name was announced...or they show him on the big screen..and the crowd usually erupts. now...against chavez...he'll get no love because the majority of those ppl are mexican...but if he should win and is humble in doing so, they'll come to love him again. his ppl need to step up their game and get this man paid. especially if he wins.

no doubt. ward is definitely on the path to greatness. the man is amazing....methodical, calculating...he has every trick in the book. i love watching that dude fight. there's nothing boring about it. hbo doesn't deserve his fights. unappreciative, blood and guts craving, don't know shit about boxing ass muthafuckas. laugh.gif

I'm sure Martinez is happy with the numbers. It's about what he gets paid plus whatever percentage he's getting of the biggest gate he has ever had should add up to his biggest purse. But from what i read about Martinez financial situation he has money, I seriously think he just wants these big fights mostly because of pride..

The bad thing about it is they will turn on him and start degrading him and his skills inside the ring, just like they did Floyd, same way their doing Broner right now somewhat with the sneak disses about him not making weight

They need to cut us a check, we better promoters then they are lmao

I forget who called it on here but Roach seemed to confirm that they won't look to fight Ward for a while, which is probably a couple of years from now. I hope this fight does happen before Ward moves to LHW, as long as Arum is involved he'll keep Junior out of harm's way for as long as he can

I don't understand how hbo could go about dissing their own product? I mean these are guys that are put in the ring to give you a job and the whole segment all we hear is bitching and complaining about them. The showtime cast does an awesome job of NOT doing that unless its deserved.

I think Hopkins should be considered as an announcer alongside kellerman. But then it might cause an issue because Roy is a good announcer too and I think him and Hopkins don't like each other. Another great announcer I've heard is Andre ward! He did FNF and he was very good, but his career is still up and running full speed. I just think hbo needs some fresh voices. Those freaking pom pom wearing dinosaurs need to go.

Who do you guys think would make good announcers?

they were doing it during the telecast...

merchant..."both of these guys would rather watch a fight of the year rather than be in one..."

lampley..."earlier we mentioned vitali klitschko being a MASTER at controlling distance...ward is ALMOST as good..."

they can't help themselves...they will shit on him and the sad part is that neither has a fucking clue. fans will regurgitate their bullshit as will some of the mickey mouse internet journalist who seem to follow suit.

broner deserves to be dissed the way he blatantly missed weight...then had the audacity to clown about it on twitter. that was very unprofessional. i could never see guys like chad, floyd or ward doing something like that. broners skills are undeniable...but he needs to grow up.

I'm not sure about the 1M mark...it's hard to crack 1M nowadays. If everyone was a bit more familiar with Sergio, then I'd side with that 1M, but hell, as we saw, Pac/Bradley only did around 700k. I'll just stick with the 300-400k since both guys are first-time headliners. You're on the west coast (I believe), so that may be the BIG difference in ppl talking about it, versus where I am. We never know though.

All you can blame is his promoter and managers...those are usually the first to get blamed (and with good reason). I agree....endorsements and such, have totally passed Sergio by, because of his management. Dude is damn near an Abercrombie & Fitch model, and dresses like a goddamn superstar, but you cant get this guy an endorsement?! Dude should've had his own cologne by now. laugh.gif

Sometimes, a guy's team is either so worried about getting paid, or they play too much into the interest of the fighter (ala Sergio begging for the Chavez fight), that they forget about the little things. As we all know, the little things, is what gets us through things. I'm sure Sergio would've been mad as hell to pose for D&G or American Eagle, while thinking about a Chavez fight, but that shit would've out him in the eye of the public. Poor management.

I know this is a little off topic but I don't understand why people keep saying Martinez should fight ward when ward himself has said Martinez is too small?.. its like the whole mayweather vs Martinez thing at 160 it doesn't seem like a good move. Plus it doesn't make sense business wise for both of them who don't have big followings. I always though ward should try some fights in Canada, their crowds always show up.

Agreed. I cant even say that Merchant is wholeheartedly with the HBO agenda, he's just a cranky old man who wants to see fighters's organs hanging out, if not, then its a boring fight to him. I know that he had ringside seats to David vs Goliath, when guys beat each other senseless, but boxing doesn't roll like that anymore.
