Full Version: who is the fighter of the year and why?
FightHype Community > BOXING HYPE > Boxing
daprofessor
i say guerrero.

jumped 2 weight classes...

beat an undefeated avoided fighter (aydin)

beat berto...

he wasn't favored to win either match. he's my pick.

i'd say danny garcia is my 2nd choice.

Danny Garcia. He meant business this year, good entertaining fights, devastating kos, and launched his career. Promising young fighter going forward.

Nonito would probably be second, his win over mathebula was his best win by far this year. The other two guys were completely out of their league and just looking for a retirement check. Math was game smart and skilled I thought the fight was very close until the champ rounds.

Guerrero had a good year, but to me the way he did it was dirty. His whole style, the way he seemed to try to sell his widest story, even his entourage seem dirty. Not to mention the whole broner thing that seemed like hes just begging for attention.

Matthysse (huge fan of his) had a solid year as well. Knocked out soto, had a great fight with ajose. Would love to see him in some bigger fights.

Alexander had a big year, even though it wasn't very entertaining (please god don't let him and guerrero end up in the ring together, it would be the second coming of Alexander Bradley).

Froch had a big year as well
leonthegee
Its Mayweather. Hasnt fought in months yet still demands the headlines lol. On a serious note id say Nonito Donaire.
Plah
Danny Garcia. 3 wins with 2 good KO's. My 2nd pick is Matthysse with Nonito 3rd.
p4pcrown
Id say Donaire. Impressive knockout wins and he sent his last two opponents into retirement.
mgrover
garcia beat a shot morales but fair enough he did do a damn good job in the khan fight.

donaire, mehhhh his wins all have a * next to them.

i cant give it to mayweather, based on one fight.

i want to give it to Andre Ward, but he just hasn't done enough this year, I hope he doesn't become a one fight a year fighter

marquez beat pac in a beautiful fashion(i think this alone should give him it), and some fedchenko i dont see why he shouldnt deserve it

Sergio Martinez can get a nod from me too, he's still dominating for an older fighter

Come on, Guerrero ? Yes, he jumped two weight divisions, but who he beat...broken Berto with over a year long lay off and Aydin with a record filled with mostly nobodies. No no from me.

I think the award should go to Marquez. He had only one fight in 2012 but I think it's safe to say it was an awesome one.

Danny Garcia is my favorite though. Definitely his breakthrough year and he did it with flying colors.
Sunni6Killer
Garcia, beating Morales and Khan.

Actually, he fought Fedchenko in April on the Rios/Abril card. Needless to say, that fight could've easily been overlooked. laugh.gif

i was expecting this...

daprofessor
garcia and marquez are definitely good choices. i cannot make a case for nonito donaire though. never heard of mathebula...and he wasn't that impressive in that victory. nishioka wasn't the best imo. arce shouldn't have been in the same ring with nonito.

Garcia had the best year with Marquez a close second. Josesito Lopez would have been on my list if he didn't let GBP talk him into the Canelo fight.

most impressive win...marquez by far. he wasn't favored...no one expected the ko.

garcia wasn't favored against morales (1st time) nor was he favored against khan. his ko of khan...and morales the 2nd time was impressive.

guerrero forget that he came off a long lay off due to shoulder injury and jumped 2 weight classes...he wasn't favored against aydin or berto. many of u here thought berto would ko guerrero. tisk..tisk...

donaire i'm sorry...mathebula (never heard of him), nishioka (beat an over the hill rafa marquez and jhonny gonzalez...big deal) and arce ( who quit in his last fight)....are not the kind of opposition that earn u fighter of the year...especially when u are heavily favored to beat all 3.

froch....did he fight this year? huh.gif

Can't agree with the first bold at all. Marquez was favored by many, if he wasn't it was probably because of the judges screwing him over so many times.

No one ever heard of aydin so idk who wasn't favoring him against aydin so I can't agree there.

Couldn't agree with you more about nonito.

And Froch Damn near retired Bute lol

the odds makers favored pac over marquez...

they also favored aydin over guerrero. aydin was berto's mandatory...and someone else's too...

forgot about bute. eh...

Come on prof Wth do the odd makers know. Even Steven A. Thought marquez would win and he's not even so great at calling basketball which is his sport. Most people I knew thought marquez would win or get robbed.

And let's not forget a lot of these odd makers/"experts" were favoring Bute over ward Lmfao. Some were saying ward was ducking him after he won the super six. And Froch was thinking about retirement if he lost to Bute, to me that's a pretty big win. But to each his own, right.

don't confuse the odd's makers with the talking heads. the odd's makers are there to make money for the casinos and rarely get it wrong. the talking heads/experts don't know shit about boxing! laugh.gif
BrutUalBK
Matthyse is the man, most fighters don't even want to face him, that should say enough in itself but hands down Marquez's impressive KO of Pac is worth all of the others wins over whomever.

In essence Marquez won 5 fights with one punch; he erased the close loss vs Pac and set the record straight on who really won those so called "close" Draw fights vs Pac and he KO'd the Pac vs Floyd fight for good.

I'd say give it to Marquez, he definitely proved he deserved it!!
VJones
JMM....at 39, he's still developing and redefining himself in boxing. He's a little big man. Sometimes counted out. Sometimes under appreciated. But he continues to shake up the sport. On his win and knockout of Manny Pacquaio, he gets my vote not only for the impressive nature of his performance, but because he put a stop to so-called mega-fight media pandering, ridiculous all-time great labeling (mind you, before a career is even finished), and he single-handedly (pun intended) returned boxing conversation back to some semblance of realistic overview. =)

DITTO!
Kratza
Garcia or Guerrero

Garcia has a KO of the year candidate in 2 of his fights this year (Marquez will get it though) and he beat the best 140 pounder on paper in Amir Khan

Guerrero jumped up two weight classes and beat a former title holder and a top WW, enough said

I'm always picking with Professor, especially when it comes to Robert Guerrero. Honestly though, Mr. Miyagi (Professor) strategically forced me into giving Bradley against Pacquiao. Hell, he practically made me like Bradley. laugh.gif

I let him know that this Guerrero transition wont be easy...I dont think I'll ever like Guerrero though. Lol

ESPN gave donaire Fighter of the year. Don't agree at all but I'd like to reiterate that ESPN doesn't know shit about boxing and usually have an agenda in siding with fighters.

Garcia had a far better year. Donaire just had an active year

Are you serious? They gave it to Donaire, Arce isn't anything special so I can't see why they gave it to him. I'd have no problem with JMM receiving especially based on how he won.

Exactly, arce was beginning to get ran through by rojas. The Japanese dude looked like he only came for a retirement check. And although mathebula was an unknowingly he made donaire look like shit.

Garcia fought top competition all year and had some great wins

I see what's happening here, it appears someone is building their next new Pacquiao now that the other one has been knocked out on his face. I guess they figured he's a Flip that is knocking out fighters who come straight forward, and he has a decent smile plus he speaks English and his native Tagalog well then they figured that they come market him much in the same manner they did Manny.

I wonder what happens to him once someone puts him face first on the canvas??

find another fighter, rinse and repeat

Guerrero had a good year, but doesn't deserve to be in the conversation.
BoxingFan86
Potential candidates...

Keith Thurman - Reckless and sloppy, but he's been knockin' heads off.
Adrien Broner - Need I say more?
Kelly Pavlik - Robert Garcia has this guy lookin' rejuvenated. I can even see the improvements of Pavlik's left hand, which I'm impressed by. He's no longer a one-handed fighter.
daprofessor
so both espn and ring got it wrong.

jmm victory over pac > donaire victories over wv2, mathebula, nishioka and arce

it is blatantly obvious the ppl who cover boxing really don't know much about it.

Do we expect too much to want a dominate champion who fights stellar competition 2-3 times a year? tongue.gif

were u excited about any of those match ups? did u think he would lose to any of them?

i knew he'd beat them all. his performances against wv2 and mathebula were not exactly spectacular. they were underwhelming to be honest. had he destroyed all 4 the way i expected him to...maybe u give it to him for being active. quantity isn't as important as quality imo.

oh I don't mean Donaire in particular, I mean from the sport itself, can you have all 3 things that we obviously want? Usually the fighters that attempt that don't stay on top very long, or the realize they don't need to fight 3 times a year.
