"I have worked very hard for several weeks in the gym to get the victory...I'm ready for anything Floyd can bring to me on May 5th. The question is is Floyd ready for anything Miguel can bring to him. I know he's a hard worker. He's a hard worker, but he's going to have on May 5th a hard worker like him. On May 5th, I trust in myself. I know what I have to do on May 5th to get the victory...When I beat Mayweather on May 5th, the only thing that's going to happen is I'm going to rest," stated WBA jr. middleweight champion Miguel Cotto, who spoke with the media today during an international conference call to discuss his upcoming May 5 showdown with undefeated pound-for-pound champion Floyd Mayweather. Check out what else he had to say about his training, Floyd Mayweather, and much more.
MIGUEL COTTO:
I'm very well prepared.
I have worked very hard for several weeks in the gym to get the victory.
If he want my title, he has to fight at my weight...the right weight.
It's my weight class. I'm comfortable here. I feel very strong. I'm really happy to get this fight.
We had more than one reason for deciding to pick the Mayweather fight instead of the Pacquiao fight, you know. I received better treatment in Mayweather negotiations. We decided to go with Mayweather.
Everything happens in life for a reason, you know. The fight didn't happen 4 or 5, 6 years ago, but it happens now, you know? I feel better right now after Margarito's fight on December 3rd, I feel much better with myself. I think this is the moment, my moment for the fight.
I had everything, I think from Margarito's victory, things stole from me; things he grabbed from myself, you know, and I have it back. I feel much better right now.
That was the first time I lost in my career and anybody can't prepare ourselves for a loss, you know? But thanks to God, I have a great family, great people around me; they helped me for that to get out of that situation. Today, I understand it's not the way you can fall on the road; it's the way you can stand up again and keep working. I wake up, I fell, and I'm still working, and I'm going to work until May 5th.
When you find peace in life, when your family brings you peace and your people around you bring you peace, you live in a peaceful atmosphere, you know? That's where I'm at right now. I have peace in everything I have in my life. Everything I'm going to do in my life, I do it with peace, and that makes me work better, comfortable, and much, much concentration on my work.
My father was a person who never stopped working for me or my family or my mom in every moment. He passed away a few years ago, but he's still on my side. I feel him. I'm pretty happy I feel him in every moment of my life.
Pedro, you know, a lot of people don't know Pedro because he was the head trainer and coach for the Cuban team. Everybody knows the achievments of the Cuban boxers in the amateur way. Pedro was the guy in charge of the Cuban team and he go out from Cuba in 2000 I think, and right after I broke up with my first trainer, Evangelista, we decided to talk to him, but he doesn't want to join us because he doesn't feel prepared enough for professional boxing yet.
It's amazing, you know, having Pedro here. I've known Pedro since 1996 and having Pedro here, having a Cuban/Latin guy working with us, with the experience, with all the knowledge he has makes it feel and work more comfortable.
That's the main purpose of Pedro in my corner, you know; make me feel like the Miguel of the beginning, make me feel like the Miguel you saw with Mosley. This Miguel you're going to see on May 5th.
Nobody is invincible in life. I know that because I passed through this point in my life, and I'm ready for anything Floyd can bring to me on May 5th. The question is is Floyd ready for anything Miguel can bring to him. I know he's a hard worker. He's a hard worker, but he's going to have on May 5th a hard worker like him. On May 5th, I trust in myself. I know what I have to do on May 5th to get the victory.
I am a different fighter. I will not play into Mayweather's games. I'm not the type of fighter that will just fall into the games of Mayweather, wanting his opponents to behave in a certain way, responding to whatever comments he has to say. Come May 5th, everybody will see who, in the end, will be disappointed.
Everything is running according to plan, according to schedule. I will be ready to counter anything that Mayweather brings. There are a couple of key weeks in preparation for the fight, a couple of weeks that are still there, and when I step into the ring with Mayweather in front of me, I will be completely ready to obtain the victory.
When I beat Mayweather on May 5th, the only thing that's going to happen is I'm going to rest a couple weeks and after that, I will sit with my team and we'll talk again.
I feel ready; I feel great. I will defeat Floyd Mayweather. I will be victorious.
I trust my preparations and I trust that, whether by knockout or by decision, I will be victorious without controversy.
I'm going to put my best effort...I'm still working until May 5th, until I get the victory, and that's going to happen on May 5th.
