After seeing last week's open workout of WBA jr. middleweight champion Miguel Cotto, world-class trainer James Ali Bashir has serious doubts as to just how well-prepared he will be to deal with the speed of the undefeated Floyd Mayweather come May 5th. For years, Bashir has been the long-time assistant trainer for Emanuel Steward, helping the legendary trainer prepare many of his fighters during his absence. Considering that Cotto had worked with Steward for two fights prior to this time last year, there's no doubt that Bashir had a first-hand opportunity to see exactly what the Puerto Rican star brings to the table during training. Judging from what he's seen thus far, Bashir thinks that perhaps Cotto and current trainer Pedro Diaz are preparing for the wrong fighter on Cinco de Mayo.
"After watching this 'hand pad workout' [during Cotto's open workout], I'm beginning to wonder is Cotto training to fight Elmer [Fudd] or Mayweather. These guys are so slow Floyd will be able to go home between rounds! I really love Miguel as a fighter, but if he's gonna fight like he's training on this tape, he's gonna get the brakes beat off his ass," Bashir would write on his official Twitter page. "Floyd Mayweather Jr. love or hate the question remains...can 'anybody' beat him? An extremely hard worker equals great warrior. Anyone or anything worth having is worth working or fighting for! There are not many fighters who are willing to pay the price. Floyd Mayweather Jr., a dynamic boxer who talks the talk and walks the walk. If father time doesn't beat 'em, I don't know that anyone can."
Was anyone else unimpressed with Cotto after watching his open workout? Is he in for a beatdown come May 5th? Check out the video and let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
