"I stand behind President Obama & support gay marriage," stated undefeated pound-for-pound champion Floyd Mayweather, who shared his opinion of President Obama's stance on same-sex marriage. Mayweather's recent revelation on Twitter is in direct contrast to ring rival Manny Pacquiao, who has come under fire lately for his own comments regarding the subject.
Last week, President Obama became the first US President to openly support same-sex marriage. Upon hearing the news, Pacquiao, a devout Catholic who was recently voted the 4th most influential athlete by Forbes, was said to have described same-sex marriage as an "abomination". During a recent interview, he allegedly suggested that America should be the model of morality for other countries to emulate and has the responsibility to uphold the Scripture to the highest order of God's command. "God's words first...obey God's law first before considering the laws of man," Pacquiao explained. "God only expects man and woman to be together and to be legally married, only if they so are in love with each other. It should not be of the same sex so as to adulterate the altar of matrimony, like in the days of Sodom and Gomorrah of old."
Mayweather, however, disagree with Pacquiao's assessment. "I'm an American citizen & I believe people should live their life the way they want," Mayweather's post on Twitter explained. It's unclear if Mayweather was made aware of Pacquiao's comments, however, the timing of his post certainly seems perfect. It should be interesting to see if Pacquiao receives the same type of treatment from the American press that Mayweather has received in the past for voicing his own opinion on far less sensitive topics.
