"Now why do you think Schaefer's getting all these dates from Showtime? Becaue he said he's going to bring Mayweather over," stated Hall of Fame promoter Bob Arum, who was extremely animated as he spoke to a select group of reporters at yesterday's press conference in New York to promote the September 15th showdown between WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and middleweight king Sergio Martinez. According to Arum, he knows for a fact that Schaefer allegedly made the empty promise to Showtime in exchange for several dates on the network, despite the fact that Mayweather has no plans whatsoever to leave HBO.
"Well, bullshit. He ain't, Mayweather ain't leaving HBO. He's not going to bring him over, so he don't want anything to happen. He wants to keep this bullshit going so he can get Showtime to put up Money for a fucking fight that isn't a fight," Arum explained, referring to Golden Boy's September 15th matchup between Saul Alvarez and Josesito Lopez, which is the main event of a quadruple-header that will be going head-to-head with the Top Rank card on the same date. "Which shouldn't be on ESPN, because he's using the Maywether leverage, and that's where the fuck it's at," Arum continued.
After the comment, Arum was asked point blank how he knew that Schaefer implied that he could get Mayweather to fight on Showtime, to which he replied, "I know it for a fact! For a fact, because I know who he said it to, and it's higher than Espinoza." Whether or not the accusation is true remains to be seen, however, it's no secret that for years Arum has been acquaintances with Les Moonves, the CEO of CBS, which owns Showtime.
