"They felt they needed someone to watch him and I told them I would help them. He's a big boy, so we watching the wraps and the scale. Chavez right now is probably still got work to do to get the weight off," stated world-class trainer Naazim Richardson, who discussed the reason why he's been called in to join Team Martinez for this weekend's showdown with WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. Check it out!
PC: I hear Sergio Martinez has brought you in to watch Chavez get his hands wrapped and work the corner. That true?
NR: Yeah man, I'm out here. I told them if I could help them, then I will. I think they got a good game plan and he's more athletic than this kid. So even though Chavez is stronger, he should be getting out-landed 2 to 1, and honestly, he should be out of the way when the 1 comes back. I think Martinez can use his speed and really bother this kid. He has more weapons.
PC: I know when Cotto and his camp brought you in for the Margarito rematch, it was kinda last minute. Was this the same situation, guys hitting you up last minute, because now people see how important the process before the fight truly is?
NR: We had been talking about it for a few weeks, but I hear so much shit, Perc, I never know until it goes down. Shit, I done heard my name linked with Amir Khan for so long now, I wanna call Amir and tell him to write me a check (laughing). But yeah, they felt they needed someone to watch him and I told them I would help them. He's a big boy, so we watching the wraps and the scale. Chavez right now is probably still got work to do to get the weight off.
PC: Besides knowing what to look for, because you would think every trainer would, but what makes you so good at catching little things when it comes to wrapping hands?
NR: I don't care about pissing people off. You gotta cover all basis when you are in there watching. If you notice, I'm not in there shaking hands or any of that shit. Freddie and dem might be mad and wanna punch me in my face, but motherfucker, I don't care. I can't cut no corners with that big son of a bitch coming at my guy. He don't need no illegal wraps. It's bad enough getting hit by somebody as big and strong as he is; big, strong, young motherfucker like that firing out on you. He distanced himself from that "my daddy" shit, but you can see more and more, he's starting to come along with that shit. He's starting to walk you down more and more like his dad. He even takes shots on the chin like him. It's just hard to convince people that he fights like his dad because he's so fucking big. Sergio has to use his hand speed on him and stick to the game plan and he will be fine.
MUCH MORE TO COME...
