"Once I get to training them, it's just boxing. It's all business in the gym. I see herÂ…she's a girl, but I don't see her like that. It's just different because I'm just there to teach her boxing. Ronda is a good girl though and I really enjoy training her. I don't see the fact of her being different from the people I train. She's a good girl and I enjoy working with her...Dawson is a good fighter, but he couldn't handle Andre Ward. He couldn't handle him. Andre Ward is the total package though. He is quick and hits hard. He took Dawson to school. That's what it looked like to me. He is a bad boy. Andre is a bad boy," stated world-class trainer Richard Perez, who talked about working with Strikeforce bantamweight women's champion Ronda Rousey. Check out what else he had to say about Rousey, Nate Diaz, Nick Diaz, Andre Ward and much more.
PC: How have you been my man?
RP: I'm doing good, man; really good.
PC: I hear things are picking up for you out there. You got some new fighters.
RP: Yeah, I got Danny Castillo and Ronda Rousey. I got Danny down here now and Ronda will be down in about a week and a half. She had to leave to do some filming or something, but she will be coming back soon.
PC: Is it different for you to train a female fighter or is it pretty much all the same for you?
RP: You know what? Once I get to training them, it's just boxing. It's all business in the gym. I see herÂ…she's a girl, but I don't see her like that. It's just different because I'm just there to teach her boxing. Ronda is a good girl though and I really enjoy training her. I don't see the fact of her being different from the people I train. She's a good girl and I enjoy working with her. It's the same with Danny. He's been doing really good.
PC: If you look at the Diaz Brothers, who at one point were known for their Jiu Jitsu, and now Ronda Rousey, who is known for her Judo of course, but also her grappling and submission skills, you seem to be the guy to go to now to make these fighters strikers.
RP: Yeah man, it seems that way, and that's what I'm trying to do. They are not used to boxing when they first come to me. And I'm sure they haveÂ…like Danny Castillo has had other boxing coaches, and I'm sure Ronda has too, but when they come to me, they really enjoy it. They really like the way that I train and my style, so that makes me feel good.
PC: Not only do you have more fighters hitting you up, but you also got a full page in the UFC Magazine. I'm so happy for you that you are finally getting your just due. How did the magazine spread come about?
RP: Dan or Don, I can't remember, called me up and asked could he do an interview with me for the UFC and I go, "What? Are you sure?" I was shocked. I thought it was a joke. And he said, "No, you are a great trainer and I want to interview you and put it in the magazine." So I was like, "Alright!" He said, "I will call you when they put it in," and I never got a phone call, but he was going to get married somewhere right after he interviewed me. I think he lives in Las Vegas, but he was going off somewhere to get married. And next thing you know, Danny brought me the magazine to the gym and said, "Richard, you're in this magazine." I was like, "What?" He held the magazine up and we took a picture and he gave it to me. I really appreciated it.
PC: You are very humble, probably a little too humble, but for years people talked about Nick and Nate's improved boxing and you were just kind of the guy behind the scenes. How good does it feel to finally start being recognized?
RP: Ah, I really appreciate it because I never thought I would get it because I didn't think I was as good as anybody else. I just thought even though I'm doing good with Nick and Nate and I did good with the boxer Rodney Jones, it's tough in MMA. You gotta put a lot of work in there.
PC: Nate will be fighting for the title in December. I'm sure he's not in camp yet, but when do you expect to get started with him?
RP: Oh no, we're training. We're training about 2 days a week right now. But he's doing his Jiu Jitsu and his running. He's not going real hard, but he's working outÂ…light.
PC: Shaking out a little bit, huh?
RP: Yeah, he's getting the feel of it right now and avoiding getting fat or anything.
PC: Is Nick in the gym a little more or is he still kind of taking it easy?
RP: He's working out too. He is doing some sparring. He just got done sparring with Andre Ward, you know, to help him prepare for Dawson. He did really good in there. And then after that, he took a week off and then we worked out in our gym. He had some guys come down and spar and he sparred with some guys and then he went and ran a triathlon last weekend. He's keeping busy. They love doing those triathlons.
PC: Other than living in the gym, it appears, what else have you been up to?
RP: That's really it. I just train and go home, and times I'm not training, I just relax. I may take my wife somewhere every once in a while, like Santa Cruz, but not too much right now because I got Danny fighting and Ronda will be coming down and then Nathan; but that's good for me because it keeps me busy. And then Nick comes in once in a while and spars with people and works with me. It just really messed me up when I saw that UFC magazine because I was like, "Wow, they really put it in there." It's a whole page.
PC: It's long overdue. The grey-haired guy in the Diaz Brothers corner finally has a face and name (laughing).
RP: (Laughing) The "White Fox" they call me. And I usually give people that come to me a different option. I don't know, I guess I'm just too humble, but even when Ronda came to me, I was like, "You sure, because you got Freddie Roach right there," and she was like, "I'm positive. I like the way you do things." But I guess I just don't think I'm that good or maybe I'm just too humble.
PC: You are a helluva trainer and you definitely have no reason to push fighters in a different direction. You deserve all you get.
RP: I appreciate that Percy.
PC: Have you been watching any fights that have caught your eye lately?
RP: I've been watching a lot of boxing. I been trying to watch the UFC, but I don't like to watch the light guys, 135-pounders and things like that. I don't like to watch those guys. I mostly watch Nathan's weight and Nick's weight, and heavyweights. I don't have nothing against the little guys; I just need to focus more on the bigger guys. Even if my guys drop down in weight or move up in weight, they will never drop that far, and a guy fighting at 135 ain't moving up to 155 or 170.
PC: What did you think of Andre Ward's performance against Chad Dawson?
RP: It was a great performance. Heck yeah! He was doing some good sparring. Him and Nathan was going toe to toe there. He had some other guys too. He was doing good. He put the hurting on Chad Dawson. I didn't think it was gonna happen like that. Dawson is a good fighter, but he couldn't handle Andre Ward. He couldn't handle him. Andre Ward is the total package though. He is quick and hits hard. He took Dawson to school. That's what it looked like to me. He is a bad boy. Andre is a bad boy.
