"Man, of course I'm ready for everybody. I got a left hook that'll drop the world, you know what I'm saying, so let's go...Shoot, Timothy, let's go. You and me, let's go. I called you out. Your name was on the list, you know what I'm saying? I'm ready for that fight...He was number 2. The order that I said was the order that I wanted to do it in too. That's something that a lot of people don't know. Paulie, I wanted to get him first. Then Timothy. And then hopefully, if Floyd wants to go up against another young thunder, you know, he did his thing against Victor Ortiz, you know? You gotta give him props. You know, Floyd ain't really scared to fight young fighters, but Victor Ortiz isn't Keith Thurman," stated undefeated power-punching welterweight contender Keith Thurman, who stopped by the FightHype Radio show to talk about his potential return to the ring this November and much more. Check out some of his highlights from the show.
KEITH THURMAN
On his next fight...
We're looking for something in November. We have no final date right now, but, you know, I would to get on that Broner, just to put that out there, you know? I'ma let Al Haymon do his thing. He does all the magic outside of the ring; I do all the magic inside of the ring, and I'm just getting ready to put on another good show for HBO.
Man, you know me, man. I want a big dog like you said. I want a top dog. I really want to know where do I stand in the world of boxing with the elite fighters. Where do I stand? And right now, nobody really wants to give me a chance. I think it's because I'm a little too young, a little too hungry, and they want somebody else to expose me instead of them going and doing the dirty work themselves, you know? So we'll see what happens. Like I said, man, I'm open for everybody, anybody. You know, I'm come from the amateur ranks where we had to fight the world, you know? To be a national champion, you fought everybody, you know, and I feel like that's how it should be to be a world champion too, but, you know, it's a little bit more business and politics in this game and I just have to deal with it.
On the difficulties of getting a named opponent...
Yeah man, it's definitely frustrating. Like I said, coming from the amateur ranks and everybody just, you know, drawing from a hat and then you had to fight. I mean, that's how it went down, man. We drew from a hat and then that's how you had to fight. So, you know, it's frustrating, but you know what they say, man, you can run, but you can't hide, man. You know, I'm coming for you.
I was ready for that bout 2 months ago, you know what I'm saying? So, I'm ready for it whenever. If Maidana got the confidence in the welterweight division to come step up to a true power puncher, you know, I'm ready to fight Maidana and take him out any given Sunday, but you know, his team, they're trying to manage him smart. They're trying to make sure that their fighter has a long, prosperous career, and you kind of can't blame them, but I believe he should take the fight, you know, because he agreed to it and then backed out. He just fought Soto Karass, had a decent performance, you know, and his management team said that they wanted a tune-up fight and that Keith Thurman was not a tune-up fight. So there you go, your tune-up's out of the way, and, you know, I don't think Maidana would fight me any time this year, but I would like to fight him as soon as possible next year if possible.
On being able to go the distance despite getting a lot of early knockouts...
When I got into a fight, 8 rounds, 10 rounds, 12 rounds, whatever it may be, you know, I train for the whole fight. I don't train just to get the knockout, but I train to have an intense fight. You know, hopefully, I don't know what my average is per round, but I like to somewhere get close to 100/70 punches per round, 100 punches per round or plus. You know, I just gotta work hard, train hard, and I fight hard, and you're gonna see me fight hard for 10 or 12 rounds, no matter what. You know, I'ma come bring it the whole fight. If I die out a little bit, you know, sometimes that happens, but that's probably because I'm gonna be trying to knock that dude out. And then even if I'm huffin and puffin, that don't mean I still can't knock you out. So whenever I'm in the ring, man, just don't blink; always be watching.
On his hit list...
Man, of course I'm ready for everybody. I got a left hook that'll drop the world, you know what I'm saying, so let's go.
I'm curious about that fight [Alexander vs. Bailey], but in honesty, man, you might see me pop up at the Paulie fight, man. I'm might try to fly out there and get a sneak peak at Paulie and see if we can make something happen, man, because I really wanna get a piece of Paulie Malignaggi. I feel like, I think he's going to run from me if I don't keep talking about him, so I'm gonna keep talking about him and see if we can make this fight happen.
He's just saying a few little things. He ain't saying nothing too big, you know. He ain't saying nothing big. One of his little Twitter friends or something said a comment and he like said, "I agree," pretty much, you know, something, something. He ain't saying too much smack though because I don't think he can back it up.
You know, outside of the ring, man, I'm just doing me, living my life, but inside of that ring, I'm a beast and I'll eat you alive.
Shoot, Timothy, let's go. You and me, let's go. I called you out. Your name was on the list, you know what I'm saying? I'm ready for that fight.
He was number 2. You know, Floyd ain't really scared to fight young fighters, but Victor Ortiz isn't Keith Thurman. Will Floyd fight Keith Thurman? That's what I want to know.
The only thing that's personal right now is I'm hungry and I'm starving and nobody wants to let me eat. I'm mad at everybody right now.
