"I give my opponent a lot of respect. I have to because he is a proven champion. The one thing I won't do is give him too much respect. I am a man just like he is and we both put our pants on one leg at a time, we both bleed blood, and come October 20th, past accolades mean nothing...all of those champions he fought, that makes for a great resume, but come October 20th, he now has to deal with Showtime Steve Upsher Chambers. I am not trying to sound cocky, arrogant, or disrespectful; that is not me. One thing I can tell you is that I'm supremely confident in myself, my abilities, and my team," stated welterweight contender Steve Upsher Chambers, who talked about his upcoming October 20 showdown with Luis Collazo at the Barclays Center debut boxing event. Check it out!
SA: Steve, we were just talking to you a few days ago about your fight with Alex Perez, however, that got canceled. We heard you will fight Luis Collazo October 20th at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn on the Danny Garcia vs. Eric Morales card.
SU: Yes, the fight with Alex Perez scheduled for October 12th was canceled unfortunately. Now I have been offered the great opportunity of fighting a great fighter in Luis Collazo on a great card alongside my fellow Philly fighter Danny Garcia. It doesn't get any better than this. I surely accepted the challenge and will represent Philadelphia and my hometown of Pittsburgh very well.
SA: How does it feel to be part of the first ever Barclays Center boxing event?
SU: It is a great feeling to finally get a good chance to show the world what I can offer. It's been a long road with a lot of letdowns and to have this chance to be the first ever boxing event to be held at the new Barclays Center against a great champion also gives me a chance to be part of history. This is a beautiful blessing.
SA: What do you think of your opponent?
SU: I give my opponent a lot of respect. I have to because he is a proven champion. The one thing I won't do is give him too much respect. I am a man just like he is and we both put our pants on one leg at a time, we both bleed blood, and come October 20th, past accolades mean nothing. It is 0-0, clean slate, and I am gonna be more than ready for the challenge. Let's get it, let's go is my motto.
SA: Collazo fought champions like Ricky Hatton, Shane Mosley, and Andre Berto. He lost to all on points. The Hatton and Berto fight was very close. This seems like a big step up for you.
SU: As far as all of those champions he fought, that makes for a great resume, but come October 20th, he now has to deal with Showtime Steve Upsher Chambers. I am not trying to sound cocky, arrogant, or disrespectful; that is not me. One thing I can tell you is that I'm supremely confident in myself, my abilities, and my team.
SA: We spoke about your training camp a few days ago. What have you and your trainer James Ali Bashir planned for Collazo?
SU: I am working hard in training camp, as I always do, no matter who I am fighting. As far as this being a big step up, it is in name, but I've fought tough guys and undefeated guys. Ultimately, at the end of the day, I'm not putting a lot of pressure on myself. I'm going to go do what I do and come out victorious as I have since 2004.
SA: Do you know who you will be sparring with in preparation for this fight?
SU: Well, as far as sparring, my gym, James Shulers Memorial Gym, is loaded with talent and champions, so it will be a group effort.
SA: Any message to the fans out there before I let you go?
SU: My prediction and message to the fans is it will be a tough grueling fight and I plan to come out victorious.
