"How can he be afraid of somebody that's 41 years old. If he's afraid of me, he shouldn't be a world champion. Give the belt to Thurman or somebody else, but don't perpetrate like you're a champion if you're afraid of me. If you're afraid of Sugar Shane, don't be perpetrating, so let's go ahead and get this over with...It's definitely not for the money. So Paulie, what do you want me to do? Do you want me to give you my whole fucking check? Paulie, get in the ring and fight. Just sign the contract, dog. Do you want the whole check? I'm not making no money anyway; I'm just fighting you for the belt," stated 3-division world champion and future Hall of Famer "Sugar" Shane Mosley, who shared his thoughts on Paulie Malignaggi's reluctance to face him and much more. Check it out!
BT: Sugar Man, what's up with the Paulie fight? I thought that was a go, but now it sounds like there's a sticking point with the money.
SM: What's the sticking point? I don't know what he wants. I mean, he's getting more than me. What else does he want? Does he want me to fight for free? He might not want to fight, but I mean, who else is he going to fight?
BT: Well, I don't know who else he can fight, but I guess he thinks there's a bigger money fight out there for him.
SM: I mean, I don't know. I mean, I can't call that. Let's go. I mean, I'm obviously the best option for him to make the most money, fighting a legend. What else do you want? He might be a little afraid or intimidated, but, I mean, come on dog, you've been in with a lot of good guys to be intimidated by little ol' me.
BT: (Laughing) I can't imagine he's actually intimidated, but like I said, I'm not so sure if there's more money out there for him. I just don't see a fight with a Keith Thurman or a Marcos Maidana getting him a bigger payday.
SM: If I was in his shoes, I don't know if I would want to fight like Keith Thurman or none of these young guns. I'd rather fight someone older and then fight the young gun next if I had to. That wouldn't be smart on his end. The smart thing is to fight me. The other smart thing he was gonna do is fight Ricky Hatton, but that fell through. That was smart, but that fell through, so you got myself and I'm not sure who the other big name 147-pounders would be. I mean, you got Amir Khan...I don't know. I'm the best choice. I don't know what else he wants to do.
He's not going to make as much money probably fighting somebody else that nobody really knows, and then he could lose the title. He's not going to beat me, but let's say he beats a Shane Mosley. Then he's finally got a big name on his record. I mean, come on. He's been in there with a lot of good people. Maybe he's worried that I'm going to use my physical strength on him or something, I don't know, but come on, you have wheels, right? So you should be able to move. I shouldn't be able to get close to you to use my physical strength, you know, if you got legs.
BT: Do you think there's any chance that this fight still comes off, or is it totally off due to Paulie's issue with the financial terms?
SM: I'm looking forward to fighting Paulie. I'm pretty much his only choice. How can he be afraid of somebody that's 41 years old. If he's afraid of me, he shouldn't be a world champion. Give the belt to Thurman or somebody else, but don't perpetrate like you're a champion if you're afraid of me. If you're afraid of Sugar Shane, don't be perpetrating, so let's go ahead and get this over with.
BT: Well how have things been going in the gym with you? You really weren't retired for very long, but is there any rust?
SM: I've been working with Kendall Holt for the past couple of days. I'm doing good. I feel great. Kendall's getting ready to fight and he's looking sharp. He's got fast hands and the power is there. He's got a few things he's going to work on before he gets in the ring with Lamont Peterson, but he still has explosive speed and good snap to his power, so he's looking good.
BT: What's it like having your dad working your corner again?
SM: It's the same. My pops is my pops. My father is kind of like how Mayweather Sr. probably is. You know, we're gonna have fun. Being in the corner, my father is gonna be saying all kinds of different things and he's just gonna be crazy. He loves this opportunity. He's kinda like Garcia's father now. He's gonna bring some life to the game.
BT: No doubt. Well, hopefully everything works out for you so you're not putting in this work for nothing. Is there anything else you want to say before I let you go? Any message you want to pass on to Paulie?
SM: Ben, I'll make more on my yearly interest than I'll make on this fight. I'm making 2 or 3 times more on my interest that I get from my money than I'm making on this fight. I'm really just fighting for the world title, you know what I'm saying. It's definitely not for the money. So Paulie, what do you want me to do? Do you want me to give you my whole fucking check? Paulie, get in the ring and fight. Just sign the contract, dog. Do you want the whole check? I'm not making no money anyway; I'm just fighting you for the belt.
