JAVIER FORTUNA: "I AM TARGETING THE BEST 126-POUNDERS IN THE WORLD, LIKE MIKEY GARCIA"

By Percy Crawford | February 01, 2013
JAVIER FORTUNA:

"Mikey Garcia is a great champion. He demonstrated his power and skill in that fight, but I am ready to take him on and prove that I am the best featherweight champion in the world. I believe Mikey Garcia's trainer was more responsible for the way the fight ended, because Mikey is a great fighter and would've continued after the headbutt...I am targeting the best 126-pounders in the world, like Mikey Garcia, Nicholas Walters, Daniel Ponce De Leon, Johnny Gonzalez, Billy Dib, and Juanma Lopez," stated interim WBA featherweight champion Javier Fortuna, who talked about his future plans and much more. Check it out!

PC: How is everything going, Javier?

JF: Everything is wonderful. God is good with me.

PC: You had a very successful 2012. In fact, 2 of your 3 opponents last year were undefeated and you took away their 0. How would you grade your performances from last year?

JF: Very good, however, I'm in the learning process and every fight I will improve myself.

PC: Obviously a lot of people weren't too thrilled about your last outing against Patrick Hyland on the undercard of Pacquiao/Marquez 4. Was that just an off night for you or was it something Hyland was doing that made you not want to over-commit to anything?

JF: Hyland was a good challenger and very difficult to fight. Everybody underestimated his abilities.

PC: What did you take away from that fight and what was it like for you being on such a big stage?

JF: I learned that I can go 12 rounds, and regardless of the opponent, I can adopt myself. I was very emotional in fighting on the undercard of a major pay-per-view and after, when I won my first major belt.

PC: How soon are you looking to get back in the ring and what caliber opponent would you like to fight next?

JF: Hopefully I will be fighting March or April. I never ask my promoter who I am fighting, but when I am fighting.

PC: The featherweight division is really starting to look good. What did you think of Mikey Garcia's performance against Orlando Salido and what are your thoughts on the way the fight concluded?

JF: Mikey Garcia is a great champion. He demonstrated his power and skill in that fight, but I am ready to take him on and prove that I am the best featherweight champion in the world. I believe Mikey Garcia's trainer was more responsible for the way the fight ended, because Mikey is a great fighter and would've continued after the headbutt.

PC: Are there any names in particular on the radar for you this year who you are targeting?

JF: I am targeting the best 126-pounders in the world, like Mikey Garcia, Nicholas Walters, Daniel Ponce De Leon, Johnny Gonzalez, Billy Dib, and Juanma Lopez.

PC: What are your goals for this year and what do you feel you have to do to improve and reach those goals?

JF: I need to do what everyone expects me to in my future fights and that is knock everybody out. By working hard with my trainer, Pablo Sarmiento, my skills will always be improving.

PC: I look forward to your next bout. I know you are going to be looking to put on a show. Is there anything else you would like to add before I let you go?

JF: I want to thank God for all he has given me, my fans, and my team.
