"At the end of the day, man, I've been a Floyd Mayweather fan for many, many years. Floyd's style in the ring has helped shape my style, and just his approach to the game in general, so that's no secret. You know, Robert getting this fight, man, especially coming off the injury that he came off of, I'm happy for him and I'ma support my guy," stated undefeated super middleweight king Andre Ward, who recently shared his thoughts on the highly-anticipated May 4 showdown between undefeated pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather and multi-division champion Robert Guerrero. Although Ward has always been a fan and supporter of Mayweather, for this particular fight, he's rooting for his fellow Bay Area native Robert Guerrero, who he came up with through the amateur program.
"I sit back and I watch it from a fan's standpoint, but I'ma support my guy because I came up with him. We fought in the amateurs together, so I'm rooting for Robert, man," Ward explained. "As a fan, I think it's just a great event, man. I know Floyd's gonna go out and give his best, and I think Robert's going to push him. And this is the sport of boxing, man; everybody has a chance to get their hand raise and that's all you can ask for, and Robert has his chance, so he's gotta make the most of it."
Though the task won't be easy, Ward believes that Guerrero has the necessary tools that will allow him to make adjustments in the fight, something that previous Mayweather opponents have yet to be able to do. "I think Robert has options, man. I think people lose sight of the fact that Robert can box. You know, his boxing skills are underestimated," Ward continued as he broke down the fight during a recent appearance on FightHype Radio. "He's coming from a different angle, the left-handed position, and I think he can bang if he wants to bang. I think he has options. He doesn't have to go in and fight one way. And obviously both of these guys are professionals, so they have what it takes to make adjustments along the way. That's really what championship boxing is about. It's not about the A and the B plan, because most of the time, that only works for so long, and then you gotta make these subtle adjustments that can be the difference between you getting your hand raised or not."
