LEONARD ELLERBE DISCUSSES SUCCESS OF MAYWEATHER VS. CANELO:

"Still growing, still counting on a daily basis...I knew early on from that point that we had something really special and the number, I fully expect us to officially announce that we will break the record at some point. If you recall in '07, the first announcement that we made was 2.15 after the Oscar fight, and then all of a sudden, the additional buys came in and that's sort of pretty much what we expect here. The number we came out with is a very, very conservative number," stated Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe, who made a surprise visit to FightHype Radio earlier this week to discuss a number of topics, including the success of Mayweather vs. Canelo. Check out what else he had to say!

MAYWEATHER PROMOTIONS CEO LEONARD ELLERBE:

On the pay-per-view numbers and the success of The One: Mayweather vs. Canelo...

Still growing, still counting on a daily basis, Hype. You know how it is. It don't stop.

It started out in New York City when we did the first stop with the press tour when, you know, we were in Time Square, which we're here in New York right now. There was over 10,000 fans, pretty diverse crowd, you know, so you had a pretty good feel. Obviously with playing an intrical role in the '07 promotion with Floyd and Oscar, you know, getting out there being on the ground with the fans, you had a chance to see early on how the fans were responding, so this had a totally different kind of feel, you know, obviously 6 years later.

Obviously I'm from Washington DC; went back home the second stop of the tour and, you know, growing up in the city, living there pretty much all my life, the city was 88% African American. When I came up to the podium, I got booed. I knew then from that point, you know, because of the Mexican/Hispanic support, which was across every stop that we made...what it comes down to is the demographics. Each state, things are expanding, you know, people are moving from across the border and they were there to support their own, and he [Canelo] put his country on his back and they came out and supported him. And you know obviously with Floyd being the crossover star that he has been for a number of years, you know, he has a tremendous fan base, not only just in the United States, but globally, so I knew then in going from city to city that the support, you know, and it just came down to the demographics.

Canelo is a tremendous fighter, but obviously he didn't have the experience that Floyd had coming in, nor the skill level, but he was going to come in and give it his best and he was going to lay it on the line for his country, and that's what he did. But I knew early on from that point that we had something really special and the number, I fully expect us to officially announce that we will break the record at some point. If you recall in '07, the first announcement that we made was 2.15 after the Oscar fight, and then all of a sudden, the additional buys came in and that's sort of pretty much what we expect here. The number we came out with is a very, very conservative number. We've already surpassed the gross because obviously in '07 with standard definition, the price [now] is $10 more because about 70% of the homes in the United States are in high definition, so there's a big difference when it comes to the gross.
