According to Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer, unified jr. welterweight champion Danny Garcia will face Mauricio Herrera in the main event of a Showtime tripleheader on March 15. The bout will take place at the Ruben Rodriguez Coliseum in Bayamon, Puerto Rico. "This is something that Danny wanted for a long time. He has been asking for a fight in Puerto Rico. We felt the time was right. He has a very strong Puerto Rican heritage," Schaefer explained to Rick Reeno of Boxingscene.com.
"Both of his parents were born in Puerto Rico. His grandparents are from Puerto Rico. Danny used to visit Puerto Rico all the time when his grandparents were still alive. The last time he went there was three years ago, when his grandparents passed away," he continued. "I think it's going to be very exciting for Danny and for the sport and exciting for Puerto Rico. I'm really thrilled that there is going to be a meaningful fight in Puerto Rico against a guy like Mauricio Herrera, who beat Provdonikov."
Also featured on the card is a rematch between former champions Daniel Ponce De Leon and Juan Manuel Lopez. Both fighters are looking for redemption as Ponce De Leon hopes to get revenge after losing their first encounter back in 2008, while Lopez wants to rebound after suffering a 4th round TKO loss to Mikey Garcia last June. The third televised bout will be an intriguing matchup as undefeated hard-hitting heavyweight contender Deontay Wilder takes on his toughest challenge when he faces once-beaten technically skilled contender Malik Scott.
