"It was a little different. The reason why it was different was because I was never really a 135-pounder. He left his amateur career at 125 or 126. I left my amateur career at 140 in 1992," stated future Hall of Famer "Sugar" Shane Mosley, who shared his thoughts on former welterweight champion Adrien Broner exercising his rematch clause in hopes of exacting revenge against Marcos Maidana. Although Mosley believes that Broner can be victorious if he makes the necessary adjustments, he's not so sure that the former lightweight champion can have the same type of success in the welterweight division that Mosley himself had when he made the jump from 135 to 147.
"I drained myself to get to 135. So I did my title defenses [at 135] and then once I got to 47, it was like that's where I was supposed to be. I was never a 35-pounder. I was a big, big 35-pounder. I was able to make the weight and jump in the ring at 47 or 51 or whatever. So it's like I was never really a lightweight," Mosley explained during a recent conversation with FightHype.com. "He probably should go back down to 140, try to do something at 140, and then go back to 47. He started at a lighter weight division; 126, 130, 135. It's kind of hard to just go from 35 to 47 like that. The only reason why I was able to do that is because I was really a big lightweight."
As far as the rematch with Maidana is concerned, Mosley noted that it will be imperative for Broner to show up with a different game plan than he had in their first fight. "He has to have the discipline to do something different. It's kind of like when Sugar Ray Leonard fought Roberto Duran the second time. He had discipline to move and frustrate and use his strengths. Adrien has to have the discipline to do that. It might not be the most exciting fight or maybe it will be, but he has to get shots off and then make a turn; not get shots off, sit there and try to look like Floyd and duck and roll," he added.
