"No response from Mayweather or his team. Fights not happening. I should of taken the title fight last December against Alexander," wrote a frustrated Amir Khan, who revealed to his followers on Twitter that he is apparently out of the running to win the coveted Mayweather Sweepstakes. With undefeated pound-for-pound king Floyd "Money" Mayweather set to announce his next opponent for his May 3 ring return, Khan has either been told or seems to think that it's time to start considering plan B. The former jr. welterweight champion went on to vent his frustrations, apologizing to his fans while at the same time wishing good luck to WBA welterweight champion Marcos Maidana.

Speaking of Marcos Maidana, this latest development likely means that he'll be announced as Mayweather's next opponent. Though nothing is official yet, Mayweather made it clear that both Khan and Maidana were the frontrunners to land the May 3 assignment. Not long after the Super Bowl ended, Mayweather revealed that he wanted fans to vote on who his next opponent would be. The only two options were Maidana and Khan. After a week of voting, Khan edged out Maidana in the poll on the heavily promoted Mayweather Promotions website after garnering 20,105 of the 35,579 total votes. That being said, in virtually every other independent poll, it was Maidana who was the clear winner. In a poll conducted on ESPN.com, Maidana netted 62% (or roughly 41,220) of the 66,484 total votes.
Whether or not Mayweather's decision was based solely on one or multiple polls, if Maidana is indeed announced as Mayweather's next opponent, diehard fans, who felt that Khan never deserved the fight in the first place, should be pleased with the decision.
