"FM is full of shit. Just like 'my next opponent' Poll," wrote former jr. welterweight champion Amir Khan, who took to twitter to respond to Floyd Mayweather's recent guarantee of a fight provided Khan gets past Mayweather's "little brother", former welterweight champion Adrien Broner, on the undercard of his upcoming May 3 clash with WBA welterweight champion Marcos Maidana. Khan appears to be reluctant to trust Mayweather's word after being passed over in favor of Maidana despite having won a fan poll, which was set up on the Mayweather Promotions website, to help choose the next opponent for the undefeated pound-for-pound king.
On Saturday, Khan reached out to Mayweather via Twitter, essentially telling him to guarantee him a fight if he's able to beat Broner on the May 3 undercard. "@FloydMayweather, tell @AdrienBroner to fight me on your card and when I beat him, you fight me next," Khan wrote. Hours later, Mayweather retweeted Khan's post, agreeing with the idea before telling FightHype.com, "I think Amir Khan should face Adrien Broner. I think that'll be a good matchup."
By Sunday evening, Mayweather had taken it a step further by publicly responding to Khan via Twitter. "I don't have an easy fight on May 3, 2014, so I can't over look @ChinoMaidana but @AmirKingKhan, if you and @AdrienBroner end up fighting ... each other on my show and you win (which you won't)... I'll fight you," he wrote, promising Khan he would indeed fight him should he defeat Broner on his undercard. It's the first time that Mayweather has publicly guaranteed a fighter the opportunity to face him when he's already scheduled to face another opponent.
Now that Mayweather has officially gone on record and agreed to Khan's request, the Bolton native appears to have his doubts as to whether or not he'll stay true to his word. Considering that it was Khan who first publicly addressed Mayweather with the idea, it's unclear why he would now respond in such a manner after actually getting the answer that he wanted. One can only assume that he's being advised not to believe Mayweather. It should be noted that, for whatever reason, Showtime Sports Executive Vice President Stephen Espinoza seemed to be strongly against the idea of Khan fighting Broner on Mayweather's undercard, telling his followers on Twitter that there was no possibility of the fight taking place on May 3.
Attempts to reach out to Khan, who plans on returning to the UK this week, have gone unanswered.
