"Golden boy is stronger than ever, Golden Boy is better than ever, and sky is the limit for Golden Boy Promotions and we're going to keep moving forward," stated Golden Boy Promotions President Oscar De La Hoya, who commented on the rumored rift between himself and Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer. De La Hoya addressed the issue when he was questioned about it during a recent conference call to promote the May 3 showdown between WBA welterweight champion Marcos Maidana and undefeated pound-for-pound king Floyd "Money" Mayweather. Though De La Hoya gave the impression that it's business as usual for his company, both he and Schaefer are definitely on totally different pages when it comes to their opinion of rival promoter Bob Arum.
"Maybe he's using reverse psychology, you know. Maybe he does feel in his mind that Floyd is going to have an easy time with Maidana and that fans shouldn't buy the fight, but that's Bob Arum for you. What he really is telling you is buy the event. What he really is telling you is Marcos is going to beat Mayweather. That's what he's really telling you. I mean, that's who Bob Arum is," De La Hoya continued, giving his opinion on Arum's comments over the weekend suggesting that Mayweather vs. Maidana was a non-competitive fight that fans shouldn't buy. "I've never had a problem with Bob Arum. I mean, I have to appreciate what he did for my career. Me personally, I have no problem whatsoever with Bob and you never know. You never know what can happen in the near future, but as far as I know, Bob Arum has no problem with me and I have no problem with him. That's the bottom line, so in boxing, you never know what can happen."
