BRYANT JENNINGS ON MIKE PEREZ: "I DON'T REALLY THINK NOTHING MUCH OF HIM...HE GOT HOLES IN HIS DEFENSE"

By Percy Crawford | April 22, 2014
BRYANT JENNINGS ON MIKE PEREZ:

"I don't really think nothing much of him. I didn't even watch his last fight against Carlos Takam, but I heard so much about it and I heard he literally lost that one. And when he fought that dude Magomed, he wasn't nothing but a typical fighter. He was bound to get beat the fuck up anyway. When he fought, the only thing he looked for was the knockout. That was it. Jameel McCline dropped him. He wasn't a technical fighter. He got holes in his defense. I just don't want them to sleep on me. I want him to come with his A game," stated undefeated heavyweight contender Bryant Jennings, who talked about his upcoming May 24 clash with Mike Perez. Check it out!

PC: How is it going, big man?

BJ: You know, getting ready and prepared for battle.

PC: People at one point thought you feared Mike Perez, but now the contracts are signed and the fight is happening. Tell us about it!

BJ: You know they had to make something up. When we get to a certain point, we fighting for possession and there has to be a prize in every fight. Other than that, we not sitting here falling into the politics and the political trends. I got a great team. J. Prince is my manager, Antonio Leonard is the man, and Gary Shaw is my promoter and we on a mission. As soon as they made this a title eliminator, now we talking. Other than that, I didn't see him as good preparation for a Klitschko fight or a bigger heavyweight.

PC: You always stated that they had to make this fight make sense to you and that it was never about fear or anything. Now that the situation is right, the fight is happening.

BJ: You know, Perc, I'm from Philly, man, and I don't play no games. I'm a real Philly boy; I don't play no games 'bout that. We represent pretty well.

PC: Perez is definitely not the biggest heavyweight, but overall, when you look at him as an opponent, what do you think of him?

BJ: I don't really think nothing much of him. I want him to come with his A game.

PC: You mentioned your team earlier. How different has it been for you to have a good team behind you?

BJ: It's a wonderful thing, man, because that's what I wanted. I wasn't only able to maneuver myself to remain undefeated; props to my trainer and my camp and the hard work that I put in, but I was also able to maneuver the way I wanted to and putting a team around me and being a boss of my own career and not just being a "yes sir" guy. I didn't want to just be listening to everybody and bringing in whoever wanted to be brought in. I didn't like to be overpowered and vetoed in a lot of decisions. I made my decision and I put people in charge to make good decisions on my behalf. J. Prince is one of the guys that you can put in charge to make good decisions, business-wise and life-wise. And Gary Shaw gonna do his thing. The only thing for us to do is get ready; get this machine ready to go to battle and that's what we do in my camp and training. Everybody know their job and we working. That's what a team is for. And you could never leave out the role Antonio Leonard plays as well, so we have a solid team, man. We good over here.

PC: From recent pictures you put out there, it appears you have been in shape for quite some time now. Have you been full throttle or just getting serious in there, because you naturally stay in pretty good shape?

BJ: Yeah, well, you know, I been working at something else. It's a little secret. Some of the world might know, but I've been working at something else, extending my athleticism and my strength. I'm just extending everything in all aspects. I'm just getting sharper in the brain and pointing out some things and being able to multi-task a lot more; just be a little more loose and a little more in tune with everything. I'm just developing, but you already know I stay in shape. I make sure that I come ready, ready, ready.

PC: You can't Google search your name these days without seeing "Deontay Wilder rips Bryant Jennings" and whatnot. What's your take on his fight with Malik Scott and the fact that he's been so vocal after that fight?

BJ: Um...well, you know...ugh, me and Malik is cool. We had some talk after the fight. We had some words. I expressed my feelings and he expressed his and me and him tight, so that's neither here nor there right there. As far as the Deontay Wilder situation, I think he's doing what he's supposed to be doing. He is taking advantage of a situation and trying to become marketable, but he is only marketable from a boxing aspect as far as just a fighter. But I don't really see a transition. I helped him out a bit. He checked my Instagram out and I posted up a dessert and I said, "This one is for him." But I think his arguments back and forth when he rant, I think anybody can do that. I don't think he could mess with me with the word play. I came back at him a couple of times and we went back and forth. If that fight was something that was possible right now, like our very next fight, then you would have seen something great. But he is no Muhammad Ali. He don't even know how to go crazy with the word play. He responds back in paragraphs to comments on other people pages about him. If you say one thing about him, he gonna respond back with a paragraph. That's how you know a lot of things get to him. He responds with a paragraph to people that don't even matter.

PC: I see you have been traveling. Mexico City. I believe you're in Houston now. Just venturing out a little or what?

BJ: Yeah, I was in Cancun, Puerto Rico and Houston. Everything has been good. Every place I go to, I have had some type of business there. I'm just getting it in and letting the people see who I am. You can go to Google and see what I do, but you can only see who I am and feel who I am by being in my presence. So regardless of what I do and regardless of what record I held, these people fell in love with me immediately because of my personality and the way that I express myself. That brings them loyal, real fans instead of fans who just watch and see what you do. I want fans in every perspective and if they just so happen to love boxing, that's great because those will be the people that embrace me win or lose; they will still be behind me. And I'm a very straight-laced person, so you not gonna see me do no dumb shit. I'm against all of the dumb shit in the world, so I ain't never gonna play myself. I have dignity and integrity and all that good stuff, so I'm definitely a people person. So it's like, win or lose, I'm still gonna be the people's champ, even though I ain't looking at losing.

PC: I appreciate the word as always. We will definitely be speaking again leading up to the fight. Is there anything else you want to add?

BJ: You know, shout out to my Twitter followers. People can follow me on Twitter @BYJennings or follow me on Instagram @BYJennings. Shout out to Fred Jenkins, my trainer, J. Prince, my manager, Gary Shaw and Antonio Leonard. Shout out to the whole Philly, shout out to the whole east and the whole world; North Philly in the building, yeahdow!
