COTTO DROPS MARTINEZ 4 TIMES EN ROUTE TO 10TH ROUND TKO; BECOMES PUERTO RICO'S FIRST 4-DIVISION CHAMPION

Moments ago at Madison Square Garden in New York, New York, three-division world champion Miguel Cotto made history, stopping former middleweight king Sergio Martinez after the 9th round to become the first Puerto Rican to win titles in four different weight divisions. Cotto dominated the fight from the opening bell, dropping Martinez three times in the first round.

After taking a commanding lead on the scorecards, Cotto never let up as he continuously found a home for his left hook. Martinez was never able to get back into the fight as Cotto's hand speed and punching power made him look like a 39-year-old fighter with two bad knees. After 7 rounds, the wear and tear of the fight was evident on the face of Martinez. Cotto turned up the pressure in the 9th round, landing virtually every punch he threw before sending Martinez to the canvas for the 4th time. In between rounds, the corner of Martinez informed him that his knees were not responding before making the decision to stop the fight.
