Moments ago, undefeated WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin successfully defended his title, stopping former champion Daniel Geale in the third round at Madison Square Garden in New York, New York. After an uneventful first round, Golovkin scored an early knockdown in the opening seconds of the second round, overwhelming Geale with punches before connecting with a right hand. Although Geale seemed unfazed and did his best to stick and move, it didn't take too much longer for Golovkin to back him up to a corner, where he unloaded another barrage of punches before landing a devastating right hand that sent Geale to the canvas in the third round. Although he beat the count, it was clear that Geale would not be able to continue much longer, so the referee called a halt to the assault.
Also on the card, heavyweight contender Bryant Jennings kept his undefeated record intact, winning a split decision victory over the previously undefeated Mike Perez. A point deduction late in the fight proved to be the difference on the scorcards as Jennings narrowly avoided a draw by scores of 114-113 (Jennings), 115-112 (Jennings), 114-113 (Perez).
