ABEL SANCHEZ ON GOLOVKIN'S WIN OVER GEALE: "IT'S GONNA TAKE A LOT MORE THAN A RIGHT HAND TO KEEP HIM OFF OF YOU"

ABEL SANCHEZ ON GOLOVKIN'S WIN OVER GEALE:

"He was determined to go out there and make a statement and he sure did...He's just such a determined guy that it's gonna take a lot more than a right hand to keep him off of you. You gotta throw combinations. A right hand is not gonna be enough, and he's so strong that even off balance he was able to stun Geale. It wasn't as good as it coulda been, but it stunned him enough to where he wasn't conscious of what he was doing or what he was saying or how he was walking and Mike Ortega saw that and was able to stop the fight," stated Abel Sanchez, world-class trainer of WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin, who talked about their recent victory over Daniel Geale, their future plans, and much more. Check it out!

PC: Congratulations on Gennady Golovkin's impressive knockout win over Daniel Geale. I'm sure you were pleased with his performance.

AS: I thought he did what we worked on in the gym. I know I was asking for some things in the middle of the rounds, but he was determined to go out there and make a statement and he sure did.

PC: Geale wants to use all four corners of the ring. I thought Gennady did a great job of cutting off the ring and not following him around. Was that something you guys worked on a lot in camp for this one?

AS: Absolutely. We have been working on that for 4 years. We tried to work on everything that can happen and will happen during fights inside of practice, SO in case it does happen, we have an idea of how to go about it, whether that's cutting off the ring or making somebody slow down. We just do what's necessary to fight our fight. Geale did a good job in the first round and in the second round, he got on his bike. I thought he did better when he was in front of Gennady instead of running away from him, but they had a game plan and they tried to execute it.

PC: It appeared Gennady touched him with something he didn't like and that's when he got on his bike, but I agree, he looked better when he exchanged a little bit.

AS: In the beginning of the second round, over by his corner, Gennady hit him with a jab and the expression on his face changed from confidence to, "Oh, what the heck was that." I think that's what started it, but it's like I said in the past, once Gennady touches you with something, your mindset is different of what you wanna do. Survival mode kicks in because this boy can punch. Gennady can punch.

PC: It's very few fighters that can eat a right hand like Gennady did and still put enough on his right hand for his opponent not to regain his faculties in the 8 seconds allowed to recover.

AS: We work on all of those facets of it. We work on his neck and his chin, but he's just such a determined guy that it's gonna take a lot more than a right hand to keep him off of you. You gotta throw combinations. A right hand is not gonna be enough, and he's so strong that even off balance he was able to stun Geale. It wasn't as good as it coulda been, but it stunned him enough to where he wasn't conscious of what he was doing or what he was saying or how he was walking and Mike Ortega saw that and was able to stop the fight.

PC: Was there any concern on your part dealing with the mourning of his father, the ability not to secure the fight with Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., and the layoff?

AS: No because when he's home, like right now, he left New York to head back to Germany. When he goes home, he goes home to his family. And that's one facet of his life. He does not train or do anything else related to boxing. When he comes to Big Bear, he comes to train and take care of business. His wife doesn't go to the fight and his son doesn't go to the fight. To him, he separates those things because he knows business is business and home is home. So I knew when he came to camp, I wasn't concerned with the death of his father as much as I was the fact that he had been off for 4 months. He's usually only off one month, but this time he was off for a lot longer. That was more of my concern than him being bothered by the death of his father. He understood the situation that he was in and in that 40-day mourning period where the whole family gets together and it kinds of heals itself, I think that was essential and he healed completely. Of course he misses him and of course he thinks about him, but his life goes on.

PC: He said he wants Miguel Cotto next. Is that the fight that makes the most sense to you?

AS: The fight at The Garden is the fight that makes the most sense. Obviously Chavez makes a lot of sense also, but if you're gonna be called the lineal middleweight champion, I think that you have to fight a middleweight to make people think you are the middleweight champion. If not, I think Cotto should be giving up that belt and allowing the middleweights to compete for not just the belt, but that recognition of the lineal champion. If he's gonna fight Canelo or someone at 54, then he's not the middleweight champion unless he's fighting a middleweight. But saying that, I think at The Garden, the fight that makes the most sense for us and for Cotto is this fight and having it in New York at The Garden. The Garden may be too small. You may need Yankee Stadium because Cotto is a big star there and Gennady is headed that way and by October or November, that could be a huge huge fight.

PC: Even though Golovkin has this crazy knockout streak going, he's very patient and doesn't seem to chase knockouts. He really seems to let it come to him. Do you agree with that?

AS: Absolutely. We know that he has the power and we know that he has the boxing skills. What I would have liked in this fight was to go 5, 6, 7, or 8 rounds against an experienced and accomplished guy like Geale to make Gennady bring out some of the things he does well that he does in the gym that he don't get to use in his fights. We are gonna need those things as he climbs the ladder and as he gets the Cotto's and Chavez's and hopefully down the road an Andre Ward fight if Andre gets out of his situation. We gonna need all of those things to be practiced now in a fight; not so much in the gym, but in an actual fight. We need to see if it works or it may not work against the higher echelon guys. Those things need to be practiced now, so when it comes down to it and we have to use it, we will have it at our disposal.

PC: That was a great display and I always look forward to Gennady's next fight. Good luck to you guys. Is there anything else you would like to add?

AS: We appreciate all of the support and hopefully we can fight again very soon. I think Tom said that we will be going in October or November. But continued support from you guys is why we continue to grow and continue to improve because we wanna give the fans their monies worth because we are in the entertainment business. So thank you from Golovkin and thank you from the Golovkin Team for all of your support.
