Moments ago at the Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas, Nevada, former champion Brandon Rios got back to his winning ways, though not necessarily the way he wanted, defeating Diego Chaves via disqualification in the 9th round. Despite the unfortunate ending, it was a good and competitive fight, with both fighters having their moments in every round. In fact, at the time of the disqualification, the judges had Chaves winning with scores of 75-74 (Chaves), 75-74 (Rios), and 75-74 (Chaves).
Neither fighter wasted time in letting their hands go, as they both exchanged combinations early and often in the first and second rounds. Chaves was landing more combinations, but Rios seemed to be landing the heavier shots on the inside. In the third round, the pressure from Rios had Chaves holding on more than the referee liked, prompting a point deduction. By the middle rounds, Chaves was beginning to box more from the outside, while Rios continued to press forward, looking to exchange on the inside. The fifth round saw another point deduction, this time for Rios, who seemed to unintentionally toss Chaves to the canvas during a clinch.
There were plenty more moments of good exchanges, as both fighters landed big uppercuts and right hands, but there were also a lot more fouls on both sides, as tempers flared between them as well. It was, Chaves, however, that earned another point deduction in the eigth round. After another clinch, some shoving, and more shouting from Brandon Rios, the frustrated referee decided to disqualify Diego Chaves for "flagrant fouls", giving Rios the victory via disqualification at 1:26 of round 9.
