FLOYD MAYWEATHER EXPLAINS 147 AND 154 TITLE DEFENSE AGAINST MAIDANA:

"There's just things I don't like that goes on in the sport of boxing....I never lost the WBA belt at 154. I'm the champion at two weights; I have the WBC and the WBA at two weights right now. I don't understand the sanctioning bodies. We really need to get this stuff under control. This is the reason why boxing is not where it can be at. We really need to get this stuff under control and I'm trying to help out...One thing about Floyd Mayweather, I never fought for a vacant belt. Not saying that I wouldn't, but I haven't. Every belt that I got, I went out there and beat a guy and I earned it the hard way," stated undefeated WBC & WBA welterweight and jr. middleweight champion Floyd Mayweather, who shared his thoughts on why the sport of boxing can be difficult for the casual fan to follow. Check out what else he had to say!

BT: Floyd, it seems people tend to give more credit to fighters coming forward swinging punches, whether they actually land or not. Do you think the technical aspect of boxing has kind of been lost or forgotten about by casual fans, or even judges for that matter? In other words, are people less educated about the sport today than they were in the past?

FM: I think it's just biased fans. It can even be my fans. It's not just in contact sports. Kevin Durant can go to Staples Center, score 50 points, and he's still going to get booed because the fans are biased and the fans are against him. Jealousy comes with the territory. You gotta realize, the fight before last, I fought Canelo, and Canelo is a very, very good fighter, a future Hall of Famer; strong, young kid. When I fought him, two of the judges gave me 8 or 9 rounds, but the fight was a majority decision? You have to realize, even with me or the fight game period, I mean, I'm fighting the biased fans, I'm fighting the critics, but I'm built for this.

BT: Isn't that frustrating for a fighter though, to have a solid performance like that kind of tainted by a scorecard that seems totally different than how the fight actually played out?

FM: Like I said before, these type of things just happen. There's other things I don't like that goes on in the sport of boxing though. For instance, I respect Canelo telling Lara, "No, I'm not fighting you for the WBA title because Floyd Mayweather is the WBA champion and the WBC champion." I never lost the WBA belt at 154. I'm the champion at two weights; I have the WBC and the WBA at two weights right now. I don't understand the sanctioning bodies. We really need to get this stuff under control. This is the reason why boxing is not where it can be at. We really need to get this stuff under control and I'm trying to help out.

BT: I take it that's why you felt like you should be defending all of your titles in one night. Is that something where not just you, but other fighters are going to have to take a stance when it comes to dealing with the sanctioning bodies?

FM: Yes. It's no different than when I fought Shane Mosley, and I respect Shane Mosley. When I fought Shane Mosley, he was the WBA champion, but when I beat him, he was like, "I'm relinquishing this. I'm getting rid of this belt." You can respect a champion for that. You can take your hat off to guys for doing stuff like that. Whereas the kid from DC who lost, I don't really know his name, the Peterson brother who got knocked out [Lamont Peterson], he's a good fighter, a really good fighter, both brothers, but he wants to parade around here with the belt? I mean, I respect him as a fighter, but I don't respect moves like that. If a guy beat me, I'd be like, "Yo, I'm getting rid of this belt. Let me go back to the drawing board and come back and beat a guy for the belt." One thing about Floyd Mayweather, I never fought for a vacant belt. Not saying that I wouldn't, but I haven't. Every belt that I got, I went out there and beat a guy and I earned it the hard way.
