AUSTIN TROUT: "I'M DOWN TO FIGHT VANES MARTIROSYAN...I'M DOWN TO FIGHT THE CHARLO BROTHERS"

By Percy Crawford | September 16, 2014
AUSTIN TROUT:

"There is a lot of different levels that they might make me go through to get back up there, but I'm willing to go through every level possible. I'm down to fight Vanes Martirosyan; he's been begging for a fight. I want my rematches. I'm down to fight the Charlo Brothers, who have been making noise in my division. Molina has a belt; looking for him. My man Andrade's got a belt, and even a rematch with Lara because he does still have the WBA belt, but I understand I gotta work my way back up to those types of fights," stated former jr. middleweight champion Austin Trout, who talked about his future plans and much more. Check it out!

PC: Congratulations on your win over Dawson. It wasn't easy, but you got it. What did you take away from that fight?

AT: Well, you know, we gotta tighten up. There are some things we gotta tighten up and that's what we are doing right now. I'm already back in the gym getting ready for another fight this year. I'm told that I will have another fight this year. I need this. These layoffs aren't good for me, so I'm glad I can get right back in there.

PC: Anytime you hit the canvas a lot, it has to go through a fighter's mind. Being that this was a must win fight for you, was the only thought just to get up at that point or were you badly hurt?

AT: My thought was, "Oh, hell naw; you better get that back." That's pretty much it (laughing).

PC: And on most accounts, this was a must win for you coming off of back-to-back defeats. Was that the mindset going into the Dawson fight?

AT: Yeah, it was a must win. It was kind of my do or die moment and instead of flight, I fought. It's fight or flight and I ended up fighting.

PC: When you fought Miguel Cotto, Canelo Alvarez and Erislandy Lara back to back to back, was it tough getting motivated for Daniel Dawson?

AT: I think it was that much easier to get motivated because my back was against the wall. I work hard for every fight. It doesn't matter if it was a former, future, or current world champion. I definitely work hard for each fight.

PC: When some people see you have been down in your last three fights, it scares them or draws criticism. Do you feel like getting up each time you've been down defines you as a fighter more than the actual knockdowns?

AT: Yeah, I believe so. I heard from an old head and he said, "To tell if you have a chin or not isn't if you get knocked down, but it's if you get back up." I still feel like I have a good chin, despite being down a couple of times. These are some strong fighters, so there is no shame in that. But I did get up and I finished these fights and I finished strong. I'm still ready and I'm still a problem I think.

PC: And you are in the mix in what is turning out to be a great junior middleweight division. When you look at the landscape of the division, what do you see?

AT: It's a great division. There are a lot of fighters who are right here at 154 or hovering around it. There is no shortage of good fights in the division and I'm glad to be a part of this division.

PC: Has making 154 become difficult for you or is it still a comfortable cut for you?

AT: I feel comfortable making the weight. It's not easy, but I'm not killing myself. I see what some of these guys do to make weight and I'm not depleting myself like that. I'm comfortable at this weight, definitely.

PC: Are there any names in particular you're targeting, maybe not in your next fight, but in the near future?

AT: In my next few fights, I would definitely like to take on a top prospect or contender or even a champion. There is a lot of different levels that they might make me go through to get back up there, but I'm willing to go through every level possible. I'm down to fight Vanes Martirosyan; he's been begging for a fight. I want my rematches. I'm down to fight the Charlo Brothers, who have been making noise in my division. Molina has a belt; looking for him. My man Andrade's got a belt, and even a rematch with Lara because he does still have the WBA belt, but I understand I gotta work my way back up to those types of fights.

PC: What did you take away from those three big fights with Cotto, Alvarez, and Lara the most?

AT: I know that what I do works, but I also have to play towards the judges and towards the crowd. When I'm on rhythm and executing, I feel like I'm unbeatable, so I gotta find that rhythm and fight my fight.  In most of those fights, I feel like I was fighting somebody else's fight and fighting to what they wanted to do instead of doing what I do best.

PC: Do you feel like just fighting your fight is the key to you becoming consistent again or is it something you feel you have to do in training or something as well?

AT: I perform best when I'm busy, so you get me 3 or 4 to 5 fights and that's a busy year; the forth or fifth fight would be my best fights. That's what I'm trying to do, just stay busy and get another fight this year and start early next year and get 3 or 4 fights in next year.

PC: What was it like for you to fight on ESPN?

AT: It was great; they treated us good. They treated us real good and rolled the red carpet out and I appreciate that. I was excited to be on any type of TV to be honest.

PC: Any fights in particular you're looking forward to watching?

AT: I was looking forward to seeing my man Adrien Broner get back in there and he didn't disappoint. Neither did Lucas Matthysse. Triple G and Rubio is a pretty interesting fight. I watch them all pretty much.

PC: I look forward to seeing you back in there later this year and wish you the best of luck. Is there anything else you wanna add?

AT: Naw, that's all. Thank you, Percy.
