"We're looking at December 6th as the date, I heard that from Al [Haymon] and we're looking at a few opponents at the moment," stated former jr. welterweight champion Amir Khan, who recently informed FightHype.com that he still plans on making his return to the ring on December 6. Although an opponent and a venue have yet to be determined, the news of Khan's date is very interesting considering that Golden Boy Promotions President Oscar De La Hoya just announced that former jr. middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez will face former welterweight champion Joshua Clottey on the same date, December 6, at Minute Maid Park in Houston, Texas.
Because Alvarez and Khan are both Golden Boy fighters, one might think that it would be easy for both fighters to appear on the same card. The only problem is that, for the time being, Khan is contractually bound to Showtime while Canelo just signed a long-term deal with HBO. In other words, assuming Khan is correct regarding his return date, it looks like fans can look forward to dueling cards between HBO and Showtime on December 6.
Although it won't be the first or the last time that the two networks have gone head-to-head, this does present a unique scenario where a promotional company is being asked to go head-to-head with itself. Is that even possible? Time will tell. At this point, regardless of what Amir Khan may have been told, it looks like De La Hoya has made it clear that Canelo is the top priority when it comes to fight dates.
