According to reports out of Mexico, former middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. announced that he's parting ways with his manager, Billy Keane. "We are already making some changes for our return. We hope it's soon, so we are no longer going to renew our working relationship with Billy Keane. It did not end badly with him and he continues to help with some things, but that's one of the changes we have done," Chavez Jr. informed Salvador Rodriguez of ESPNDeportes.com during a recent interview.
Earlier this month, Chavez Jr. announced that he was a free agent, claiming that his contract with long-time promoter Top Rank had expired at the end of September. Top Rank, however, disputed that claim and lawyers for the company revealed that a lawsuit had already been filed against Chavez Jr. stating that he still had one more fight obligation that had to be fulfilled by April of 2016. Furthermore, just yesterday, Hall of Fame promoter Bob Arum revealed that they offered Chavez Jr. a one-fight deal to face super middleweight champion Carl Froch in Las Vegas some time early next year. According to Arum, if Chavez Jr. accepted the fight, his contract with the company would be complete.
It would appear, however, that regardless of the lawsuit, Chavez Jr. has other plans. Both he and Arum have suggested that another offer from a third party has already been presented to the former middleweight champion. Allegedly, that offer even included a potential catchweight fight with undefeated pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather. Although neither man would reveal where such an offer may have come from, the fact that Mayweather's name is involved could only mean that powerful advisor Al Haymon is involved. If it's true that Chavez Jr. is considering a move to sign with Haymon, the boxing landscape could change dramatically.
