Moments ago at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey, undefeated WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev picked up the WBA & IBF titles with a dominant victory over Bernard Hopkins, dropping the future Hall of Famer in the first round and winning every round after that en route to a unanimous decision. The fight took place at the pace that Hopkins was hoping for, but Kovalev proved to be too strong and powerful, landing the harder shots that clearly got the respect of the 49-year-old. Hopkins took more punishment in the fight than he ever did in his career. Although he valiantly fought back, he just couldn't get enough offense going to keep Kovalev from pressing forward. SADAM ALI STOPS LUIS CARLOS ABREGU IN 9
Also on the card, undefeated welterweight Sadam Ali scored the biggest victory of his career, stopping Luis Carlos Abregu in the 9th round of the co-main event. Ali controlled the fight from the onset, using his superior boxing skills to easily win round after round. A lead right hand from Ali sent Abregu to the canvas for in the 6th round for the first time of the fight. Obviously sensing that he was behind on the scorecards, Abregu tried to unload with a flurry of punches at the start of the 9th round, but another series of right hands hurt him badly, allowing Ali to send him to the canvas for a second time. Although Abregu beat the count, his legs were extremely shaky, prompting Ali to pounce on him in the corner until the referee finally called a halt to the attack at 1:54 of the round.
