"Nothing, man," stated former world champion Amir Khan, who clarified that he has to receive any word about a potential September 12 showdown with undefeated pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather. Earlier this month, Mayweather Promotions submitted a request to the Nevada State Athletic Commission to officially secure the date at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada, and many assume that Khan is the frontrunner to land the assignment. Thus far, however, neither Khan nor his team has had talks with his advisor, Al Haymon, about the fight.
Khan recently visited New York to attend this years International Boxing Hall of Fame induction ceremonies. "I don't really want to talk about the guy, but everywhere I go, people are asking me. At the Hall of Fame, everyone was asking me questions about Mayweather. He's a great fighter, he's one of the best out there, but I love my chances and that's the reason I want to fight him," Khan explained during a recent conversation with FightHype.com shortly after his visit.
Prior to returning to the United Kingdom, Khan also made a stop in Washinton DC to attend a photo shoot for Showtime. He was uncertain, however, about exactly what that photo shoot was for. "Showtime, for some reason, wanted me to do this. They go, 'Oh we just want to do it for your future.' But I'm thinking, 'I'm not under contract with Showtime'," Khan explained.
There's just a little over 13 weeks left to go before Mayweather is scheduled to step back into the ring for the final fight of his Showtime contract. Subtracting 8 weeks for training plus an additional 1-2 weeks for a press tour and promotional duties, that doesn't leave much time to finalize a deal with an opponent that has yet to be approached. It makes one wonder if Khan really is the top choice that Mayweather might be considering.
