KAREEM MARTIN: "I'VE BEEN WORKING WITH A LOT OF WORLD CHAMPIONS...I'VE LEARNED A LOT"

By Percy Crawford | July 04, 2015
KAREEM MARTIN:

"I gained a lot of experience. I've been working with a lot of world champions. It's a good feeling to be around all of those great champions, seeing how to improve my skills...They can expect anything. It depends on how the person that I'm fighting comes out fighting. I can come out boxing and then I can sit there and bang. It's all up to my opponent and what he's doing," stated up-and-coming welterweight Kareem Martin, who talked about the experience he's been getting working with the likes of Lamont Peterson, Adrien Broner, and more. Check it out!

PC: You are only 19 years old, yet you have been in camp with Adrien Broner and a lot of other good fighters. What has it been like to gain so much experience at such a young age?

KM: I gained a lot of experience. I've been working with a lot of world champions. It's a good feeling to be around all of those great champions, seeing how to improve my skills.

PC: You also have Barry Hunter and the guys at the Head Banger's Gym as well. I'm sure Barry is dropping a lot of knowledge on you as well.

KM: The Head Banger's Gym is a great gym. We all like a family over there. I love them all. That's my family. That's why we are so close and that's why we listen to Coach Barry because we look at him like a father figure. So we listen to him real good.

PC: DC is known for having a lot of great boxing talent. I'm sure you are looking to be the next name to come out of Washington.

KM: Yeah! I'm training my hardest to be great!

PC: You last fought in May. How soon can we expect to see you back in there?

KM: I wanted to be back in for July, but I ain't heard nothing yet, so I'm thinking more like August.

PC: Have you been staying in the gym and actively working or just waiting for a date?

KM: Yeah, I'm in the gym every day. I'm always training.

PC: Have Lamont and Anthony Peterson been any influence on you at all?

KM: I've learned a lot from them. I see how hard they work and, man, I've learned a lot from them just me being a little kid and watching them since I was 10 years old. I learned so much from them.

PC: Who are some of your boxing idols, past and present?

KM: I like Sugar Ray Leonard, Marvin Hagler, and Pernell Whitaker. As far as current fighters, I like Lamont, because I have seen what he's capable of doing, and Floyd Mayweather. They have a lot of guys out there that I like.

PC: When people pay attention to Kareem Martin, what can they expect from you?

KM: They can expect anything. It depends on how the person that I'm fighting comes out fighting. I can come out boxing and then I can sit there and bang. It's all up to my opponent and what he's doing.

PC: Do you feel like the welterweight division is where you will make your mark?

KM: I'm comfortable at 147, but I might try 140. I gotta see how my body is going to take it, but I really want to try 140.

PC: You were a very decorated amateur. Tell us a little bit about your amateur days.

KM: I had a real good amateur career. I had over 120 fights with only 12 losses. I won fights out of the country. My amateur career was real good. I wish I would have been old enough to make the 2012 Olympics. I was too young to make that one and now that they doing the no head gear, it was better for me to turn pro.

PC: Any regrets for not sticking around?

KM: I'm comfortable with where I'm at. I'm happy how it's going. I'm signed to a good manager and he's moving me right. I couldn't be more happier with how my pro career has started out.

PC: What are some of the things you are working on in the gym?

KM: I'm working on the whole package. I'm getting ready for any kind of style, boxing, banging, head movement. I'm just ready to get back in the ring.

PC: We're going to be keeping an eye out for you. I've heard nothing but good things about you, so I look forward to following your career. Is there anything else you want to add before I let you go?

KM: Thank you! I'll let you know when my next fight is coming up. It should be soon.
